  1. The Dutton family owns the largest cattle ranch in Montana, and the ranch house on screen is a real one. Principal photography began here in August 2017, at the Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby, which stands in as John Dutton's home. The house has a log cabin motif and was built between 1914 and 1917. Most of its interiors are not shot here but in Utah, which is the next stop. The main house is now a guest ranch just south of Darby.

  2. Step inside the Dutton house and you are in Utah. The production used all three soundstages at the Utah Film Studios in Park City, a total of 45,000 square feet. The crew set up most of the lodge interiors in this massive building off Kearns Boulevard, along with the bunkhouse and the Montana governor's office: about 11 different sets in all.

  3. Dan Jenkins develops a country club in the story, and Promontory, a club right outside Park City, played it. By November 2017 the crew had already filmed at more than twenty Utah locations, including the Salt Flats and Spanish Fork, and Promontory Club was on the list. The series sets the Dutton family against land developers, and this Utah club helps stand in for the Montana of the story.

  4. Monica walks out of a classroom at "Bozeman University" in the show, but the building is the Park City Library in Old Town, off Park Avenue. The storyline takes place in Montana, not Utah, so Utah has to stand in for Montana, even for a university campus. The library was first established in 1917 on Main Street, and its current location dates from 1993.

  5. The story is set in Montana, so every time the crew shoots on 25th Street in Ogden they have to shut down the main road, change store signs and change any sign that says Utah. Location manager Dustin Daniels says they even rename the coffee shop each time they return. The street began with the opening of Union Station at its west end, during the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869, and the historic district covers three blocks.

  6. In August 2020 the series announced that filming was moving completely to Montana, and an undisclosed production location was rented in Missoula. Ryman Street near the County Courthouse became a film location. The courthouse is at 200 West Broadway, in the center of downtown Missoula.

The Hunger Games: North Carolina to Atlanta

The Hunger Games was filmed almost entirely in North Carolina: District 12 is the abandoned Henry River Mill Village, the arena is DuPont State Forest with Triple Falls, and the Capitol parade rolls through Charlotte. The sequels moved to Atlanta, where Swan House, the Goat Farm Arts Center and the Marriott Marquis stand in for Snow's mansion, the District 12 Justice Building and the Capitol tribute center. This route follows the story from the reaping to the Hanging Tree, with eight real places and what each one plays in the films. Some sites, such as Henry River Mill Village, are private, so check the guidance before you go.

Nomadland: Nevada to the Badlands

Nomadland follows Fern, a widow who leaves the Nevada gypsum town of Empire in a van, past a desert gathering in Arizona and a campground in South Dakota's Badlands National Park, to the restaurant at Wall Drug and the coast at Point Arena, California. The route takes the film's places in story order, five stops across four states. The Arizona stop is approximate: the pin marks Quartzsite, where Bob Wells's real nomad gathering is held.

Easy Rider: Los Angeles to New Orleans

Easy Rider sends two bikers east from Los Angeles toward Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and the film really was shot along the way: at Los Angeles airport, on Route 66 in Flagstaff, in Monument Valley, in New Mexico and in Louisiana, ending at a cemetery in New Orleans and a country road near Krotz Springs. The route follows Wyatt and Billy from the drug sale in Los Angeles to the final scene in Louisiana, with a stop at each place the film is known to have used. The commune was a stand-in staged in Malibu, and some sites are approximate.
