What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
  1. The film opens over Seattle, and the view comes from Kerry Park, a small viewpoint on the south slope of Queen Anne Hill. The view is the classic Seattle frame: the Space Needle prominent at the centre, Elliott Bay to the west and Mount Rainier in the background. The story is set in the Seattle area, and this is where the film introduces it. Principal photography ran between June and August 1998.

  2. Padua High School is Stadium High School in Tacoma, where many of the scenes were shot between 8 June and 6 August 1998. Cameron James arrives here as the new student, quickly smitten with sophomore Bianca Stratford, and the school's guidance counselor is Ms. Perky. The building is stranger than most schools: construction began in 1891 as a luxury hotel in Châteauesque style, a fire gutted it in 1898, and it opened as a school in 1906. Today it is a public high school in Tacoma's Stadium District.

  3. Cameron probes Bianca for information about her sister Kat, so that Patrick has something to work with. Bianca's answer sets up the whole plot: "you know I can't. Not unless my sister does." The Troll is the backdrop: an 18-foot sculpture under the north end of the Aurora Bridge, clutching a real Volkswagen Beetle. It was made by four artists.

  4. Patrick wins Kat over by serenading her with Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" while she is at soccer practice. The scene was shot in the Stadium Bowl beside the school, with Heath Ledger running up and down the stairs. It took just three takes and is regarded as one of the most iconic moments of the film; the song was once going to be "I Touch Myself" by Divinyls. The 1910 stadium looks out over Commencement Bay.

Visitor guidance: The stadium is next to Stadium High School; access depends on school events, so check before going.

  5. After Kat helps Patrick escape detention, they go for a boat ride, and Patrick points out a paintball area: "Are you up for it?" They throw paint at each other, and the date turns romantic. The paintball set was built for the film and has since been removed, but the setting survives: Gas Works Park, on the north shore of Lake Union, sits on a former gasification plant that ran from 1906 to 1956. A picnic shelter and children's play barn remain.

Visitor guidance: A public park; the former plant is part of the park.

The Outsiders: From Tulsa to Windrixville

The Outsiders takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film was shot on location there: at Circle Cinema, the Admiral Twin Drive-In and a house on North St. Louis Avenue that is now a museum. S. E. Hinton's story of the poorer Greasers and the affluent Socs follows Ponyboy Curtis from a movie-theater beating to a church fire and a final essay. The route runs through the story in order: the cinema, the drive-in, the Curtis home, the Windrixville church that was filmed around Skiatook, and the school where Hinton wrote the book. The school is a traditional identification, and Windrixville is marked only by the town.

The X-Files: Vancouver Standing In for America

The X-Files is set in Oregon, Alaska, Washington State and Pennsylvania, but it was filmed around Vancouver: in Queen Elizabeth Park, at Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, at Delta Air Park and in Chinatown. The show remained in Vancouver for its first five seasons, and its 2008 film returned to British Columbia. The route follows seven episodes and a film, from the pilot in 1993 to I Want to Believe in 2008, and pairs each scene with the British Columbia place that played it. Some scenes were shot in a specific building or clearing the sources do not name, so those pins are approximate.

Yellowstone: Dutton Ranch, Montana and Utah

Yellowstone is set in Montana, but the Dutton ranch house is the Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby, Montana, and much of the rest was filmed in Utah, in Park City and Ogden, before the shoot moved to Missoula. The route follows the production from August 2017 near Darby and at Utah Film Studios, through Utah stand-ins for Montana, to the move to Missoula in 2020. The locations are listed in filming order, not story order.
