The X-Files: Vancouver Standing In for America

The X-Files is set in Oregon, Alaska, Washington State and Pennsylvania, but it was filmed around Vancouver: in Queen Elizabeth Park, at Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, at Delta Air Park and in Chinatown. The show remained in Vancouver for its first five seasons, and its 2008 film returned to British Columbia.

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. In the pilot, Mulder arranges for the exhumation of the third victim, Ray Soames, outside the Oregon town of Bellefleur. When the coffin is opened, the body inside is desiccated and malformed. The graveyard scene was shot in Queen Elizabeth Park, the first time that park had stood in for a cemetery; the series used it the same way again in a fourth-season episode. The pilot took fourteen days in March 1993, and the show stayed in Vancouver for its first five seasons.

Location precision: The sources name Queen Elizabeth Park but not the spot used as the graveyard; the pin marks the park.

  2. Mulder and Scully visit the psychiatric hospital where Soames was committed before his death, and meet two of his former classmates: the comatose Billy Miles and wheelchair-using Peggy O'Dell. The interiors were filmed in a disused building owned by Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Riverview was a mental health facility until it closed in July 2012, and its vacant structures have often been used as filming locations.

Location precision: The episode used a disused building at Riverview; the pin marks the hospital site, not a documented building.

  3. Ice begins with a mass murder-suicide among geophysicists at an outpost in the Icy Cape of Alaska, and Mulder and Scully head for it. Alaska was played by Vancouver-area sites: the interiors were built on a set at an old Molson brewery site, while the few exterior shots were filmed at Delta Air Park, whose hangars and flat terrain simulated an Arctic location. The air park is a private aerodrome east of Delta, British Columbia, and hosts an annual fly-in.

Location precision: Only the few exteriors were shot at the air park; the pin marks the aerodrome itself.

  4. Darkness Falls opens in Olympic National Forest in Washington State, where a group of loggers flee through the woods. Mulder and Scully meet Forest Service employee Larry Moore, and Spinney suspects an organism dormant in a tree for centuries was disturbed when it was illegally cut down. The forest was really Lynn Valley, British Columbia, in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve. Bad weather plagued the shoot, and the location's inaccessibility caused further delays.

Location precision: The article names the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, not a specific clearing; the pin marks the reserve.

  5. Hell Money opens in San Francisco's Chinatown, where a Chinese immigrant, Johnny Lo, makes his way to his apartment. Meanwhile an underground lottery has participants either win money or lose an organ, depending on tiles chosen from a pair of vases. San Francisco was played by Vancouver: exterior scenes were filmed in its Chinatown, and the gambling parlor interior at the Welsh Irish Scottish English (W.I.S.E.) Hall. The neighbourhood, Canada's largest Chinatown, still has traditional restaurants, markets and tea shops.

Location precision: The episode is set in San Francisco and shot in Vancouver; the pin marks the neighbourhood, not the individual streets filmed.

Visitor guidance: The neighbourhood is centred around Pender Street; restaurants, markets and tea shops line the area.

  6. Mulder and Scully are sent to Home, Pennsylvania, after children find a corpse during a sandlot-ball game, and they talk to local sheriff Andy Taylor. His station was played by the exterior of the Langley Community Hall in Fort Langley, British Columbia. The episode was filmed near Fort Langley and Surrey, and careful reverse angles hid the mix of old and new buildings. The hall still houses meeting space and a branch of the Fraser Valley Regional Library.

Visitor guidance: The hall is in Fort Langley and houses a Fraser Valley Regional Library branch.

  7. I Want to Believe sends Mulder and Scully to investigate the disappearances of several women in West Virginia, the latest an FBI agent named Monica Bannan. The exterior of Bannan's house was filmed in Pemberton, a place Spotnitz found beautiful but extremely cold, and several other locations were in and around Pemberton Valley. Filming began in Vancouver in December 2007 and finished on 11 March 2008. Pemberton is a village in the Squamish-Lillooet region of southwestern British Columbia.

Yellowstone: Dutton Ranch, Montana and Utah

Yellowstone is set in Montana, but the Dutton ranch house is the Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby, Montana, and much of the rest was filmed in Utah, in Park City and Ogden, before the shoot moved to Missoula. The route follows the production from August 2017 near Darby and at Utah Film Studios, through Utah stand-ins for Montana, to the move to Missoula in 2020. The locations are listed in filming order, not story order.

The Hunger Games: North Carolina to Atlanta

The Hunger Games was filmed almost entirely in North Carolina: District 12 is the abandoned Henry River Mill Village, the arena is DuPont State Forest with Triple Falls, and the Capitol parade rolls through Charlotte. The sequels moved to Atlanta, where Swan House, the Goat Farm Arts Center and the Marriott Marquis stand in for Snow's mansion, the District 12 Justice Building and the Capitol tribute center. This route follows the story from the reaping to the Hanging Tree, with eight real places and what each one plays in the films. Some sites, such as Henry River Mill Village, are private, so check the guidance before you go.

Nomadland: Nevada to the Badlands

Nomadland follows Fern, a widow who leaves the Nevada gypsum town of Empire in a van, past a desert gathering in Arizona and a campground in South Dakota's Badlands National Park, to the restaurant at Wall Drug and the coast at Point Arena, California. The route takes the film's places in story order, five stops across four states. The Arizona stop is approximate: the pin marks Quartzsite, where Bob Wells's real nomad gathering is held.
