Braveheart: Glen Nevis and Ireland's Stand-ins
Braveheart's Scotland is partly the real thing and partly Ireland: Wallace's village of Lanark was built in Glen Nevis, but York is Trim Castle, Stirling Bridge was staged on the Curragh and Longshanks' court is Bective Abbey.
The route follows seven filming locations in the order of the story, from the Highland glen to the Irish fields, lakes and ruins that stood in for the battles and castles. Most of the shoot moved to Ireland at short notice, so the film's map is split between two countries.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Wallace's home village is where the film's love story starts: the adult Wallace comes home and secretly marries his childhood friend Murron. The film's Lanark was built in the Glen Nevis valley at the foot of Ben Nevis, basing the house designs on those of St Kilda. The set was dismantled after filming, but the car park built to serve it was kept, and the filming site lies up the glen past it.
Location precision: Lanark was a set built up the glen and later removed; the pin marks the glen near the car park, not the exact site.
Visitor guidance: The village set is gone; the filming site is up the glen, past the Braveheart Car Park.

Wallace defeats an army sent by the prince at Stirling, and the film shot that battle on a flat Irish plain, the Curragh in County Kildare. The scene took six weeks to film, with nine cameras and 2,000 extras, and no bridge. Ireland had offered 1,600 Army Reserve members as extras, and Gibson had the same extras play both armies.

After Stirling, Wallace invades England by sacking York. The walled city on screen is Trim Castle, a massive ruin that was dressed with wooden buttresses and a gate that alone weighed seven tons. The same walls also doubled for scenes set in London. The castle was built by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter, and today it is owned and cared for by the Irish state.
Visitor guidance: The castle in Trim, County Meath, is owned and cared for by the Irish state.

At Falkirk the nobles Mornay and Lochlan withdraw, bribed by Longshanks, and Wallace's army is overwhelmed. The battle was staged in fields outside the town of Ballymore Eustace, and some of the film's battle scenes were shot around the village. Nearby stands Russborough House, home of the Beit art collection.

After Falkirk, Wallace kills Mornay and Lochlan for their betrayal. His escape on horseback was filmed at Blessington Lakes, where a 45-foot tower was built for the leap into the water. The lake is a single reservoir, Ireland's largest artificial one, formed in the 1940s by the Poulaphouca Dam to supply electricity and water to the Dublin region.

As Wallace's legend grows after Mornay's killing, he is seen on a spectacular mountain path. That was filmed on the Mamores, a ridge of ten Munros about fifteen kilometres long, between Glen Nevis to the north and Loch Leven to the south. Access to the ridges is from Kinlochleven or from Glen Nevis.
Location precision: The trek was filmed along a mountain path in the range; the pin marks the Mamores, not the exact ridge.
Visitor guidance: The ridges are reached from Kinlochleven in the south or from Glen Nevis in the north.

Wallace is captured at a meeting in Edinburgh, and the film shot Longshanks' court in County Meath. Bective Abbey, a Cistercian house on the River Boyne founded in 1147, served as the courtyard of Longshanks' castle and also supplied the dungeons where Wallace is imprisoned. The state bought the site in 2012, and the Office of Public Works manages it.
Visitor guidance: The ruined abbey on the River Boyne in County Meath is managed by the Office of Public Works.
