What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Rome opens the "Eat" leg of the journey. In the memoir Gilbert spends four months in Italy eating and enjoying life; on screen Liz indulges in pasta and gelato, and her time in Rome mostly revolves around Piazza Navona. The exterior of her apartment was filmed at 18 Via dei Portoghesi. The piazza is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian, and Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers (1651) stands in front of the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.

  2. Eating her way through Italy, Liz heads south to Naples, the birthplace of pizza. The film's pizza scene was shot at L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele, a restaurant that dates back to 1870. Naples and Rome were the two Italian cities used for a shoot that began in August 2009. In the memoir, Gilbert spends four months in Italy, eating and enjoying life; Da Michele is where the film puts that appetite on screen.

  3. India is the "Pray" leg. In the film Liz stays at an ashram, where she delves into the power of prayer and is tasked with humbling chores like scrubbing floors; "Texas Richard" becomes both a challenge and a support. Gilbert never revealed the real ashram, so the production filmed at the Hari Mandir Ashram in Pataudi, Haryana, a 28-acre site with a hostel and school. Several of its staff appeared as extras.

Location precision: The memoir's ashram is unnamed; the film shot at Hari Mandir Ashram in Pataudi, and the pin marks the town of Pataudi rather than the ashram.

  4. Gilbert ends her year in Bali, and in the film Liz reunites with Ketut, a local healer. Ubud's name comes from the Balinese word ubad, "medicine". Liz and Felipe's stroll through the bustling local market was shot at Ubud Market, Pasar Seni, across the road from the Ubud Palace. The royal palace is especially known for its traditional Balinese dance shows.

  5. Cycling is how Liz meets Felipe, a Brazilian: while out on her bike she has a run-in with him, and at village festivities he apologizes for the accident and they strike up a conversation. The beautiful rice paddies where Liz is seen riding are the Tegallalang Rice Terraces, a swathe of stacked terraces outside Ubud that have become a major Balinese tourist attraction.

  6. The film's beach scenes were filmed at Padang Padang on the Bukit Peninsula, though the bar where Liz and Felipe meet was a set created for the movie. The 110-metre beach of fine white sand and tall cliffs gained international fame from the film, and it is a world-class surf beach with a famous break called Padang Padang Left. Access is down 120 steps and a path between a fallen rock and the cliffside.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory: Munich to Nördlingen

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) was shot in Germany: Wonka's factory gates are a Munich gasworks, the Chocolate Room was built at Bavaria Studios, and the final flight over town is footage of Nördlingen. The route follows the film in story order, from Bill's Candy Shop and Charlie Bucket's street to the factory gates, the Chocolate River set and the glass Wonkavator. Some pins mark only a street, and the Chocolate Room was a studio set.

Dances with Wolves: The South Dakota Frontier

The 1990 Western is set on the 1863 frontier and was filmed mostly in South Dakota: a Fort Hays set near Rapid City, the Badlands, the Triple U Buffalo Ranch and Spearfish Canyon. John Dunbar's journey from a frontier fort to a Sioux winter camp is rebuilt from real prairie and canyon. The route follows the story's order and ends at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, named in the film's epilogue text. Several stops are film sets or private land, so pins mark the nearest real place.

Cast Away: From Memphis to Monuriki

Cast Away strands a FedEx troubleshooter on a Pacific island that is really Monuriki in Fiji, with a failed raft escape shot on Namotu. Its Memphis scenes draw on FedEx's real home base, and its opening and closing crossroads lie near Canadian, Texas. The route follows Chuck Noland from a Moscow street off Red Square and the FedEx hub in Memphis to the two islands in Fiji, then back to the Texas Panhandle for the last scene. The island is never named in the film, so two stops are filming stand-ins.
