What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Bill's Candy Shop is run by Bill, whose signature song "The Candy Man" became a big hit for Sammy Davis Jr., who had wanted to play Bill himself. Director Mel Stuart turned him down: he felt that a big star in the candy store scene would break the reality. The shop was filmed on Lilienstraße in Munich, during a shoot that ran from 31 August to 19 November 1970.

Location precision: The film location is given only as Lilienstraße in Munich, with no house number, so the pin marks the street.

  2. Charlie Bucket is a 12-year-old paperboy from a poor family. On the day before the factory tour he buys a Wonka Bar with money found in a gutter, and it holds the fifth Golden Ticket. Arriving home with it, he asks Grandpa Joe to chaperone him to the factory. The exterior of the Bucket house was a set built solely for the film and filmed on Quellenstraße in Munich, so this is a street to look at, not a house to find.

Location precision: The house was a set built for the film; the location is given only as Quellenstraße, so the pin marks the street.

  3. On tour day, Wonka greets the children and their five accompanying adults at the factory gates and leads them inside. Gene Wilder's entrance was unannounced: nobody knew he would limp, then somersault, so the reaction was real surprise. The factory's exterior is the gasworks of Stadtwerke München at Emmy-Noether-Straße 10. Munich was chosen partly for this building, whose exterior, slightly modified by art director Harper Goff, made a handy chocolate factory. The entrance and side buildings still exist as of 2021.

  4. Inside the factory, Augustus Gloop falls into the Chocolate River and is sucked up a pipe. None of it was a real factory: Harper Goff housed the factory sets and the massive Chocolate Room at Bavaria Studios in Munich. About a third of the props were edible, but the river was only water with food coloring. Stuart kept the child actors from seeing the set until the day of the shoot, so their reactions would be genuine.

  5. To close the story, Wonka invites Charlie and Grandpa Joe to fly over the town in the Wonkavator, a multi-directional glass elevator. The town below is Nördlingen in Bavaria, filmed from the air. The shot of the elevator rising out of the factory was taken at Bößeneckerstraße 4, 86720 Nördlingen, now the location of a CAP-Märkte.

Location precision: The aerial footage covers the whole town; the pin marks the Bößeneckerstraße address of the elevator-rising shot.

Dances with Wolves: The South Dakota Frontier

The 1990 Western is set on the 1863 frontier and was filmed mostly in South Dakota: a Fort Hays set near Rapid City, the Badlands, the Triple U Buffalo Ranch and Spearfish Canyon. John Dunbar's journey from a frontier fort to a Sioux winter camp is rebuilt from real prairie and canyon. The route follows the story's order and ends at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, named in the film's epilogue text. Several stops are film sets or private land, so pins mark the nearest real place.

Cast Away: From Memphis to Monuriki

Cast Away strands a FedEx troubleshooter on a Pacific island that is really Monuriki in Fiji, with a failed raft escape shot on Namotu. Its Memphis scenes draw on FedEx's real home base, and its opening and closing crossroads lie near Canadian, Texas. The route follows Chuck Noland from a Moscow street off Red Square and the FedEx hub in Memphis to the two islands in Fiji, then back to the Texas Panhandle for the last scene. The island is never named in the film, so two stops are filming stand-ins.

50 First Dates: Oʻahu's Windward Coast

50 First Dates is set and mostly filmed on Oʻahu, Hawaii: Henry Roth works at Sea Life Park, near Makapuʻu Point, and falls for Lucy Whitmore, who loses every day's memories overnight. Kāneʻohe Bay, Laie, Kualoa Ranch and Makapuʻu Point's lighthouse all appear. The route follows Henry's courtship from the film's opening shot of the islet Mokoliʻi to a first kiss by the lighthouse. Some interiors, such as the walrus habitat, were shot in California, and the café's exact filming spot is uncertain.
