Game of Thrones: Spain and Morocco

The journey south ran through Morocco first. For the third season the Atlantic ramparts of Essaouira stood in for Astapor, the slaver city where Daenerys buys an army of eunuch soldiers, and the earthen ksar of Aït Benhaddou stood in for Yunkai, whose two hundred thousand slaves she promises to free. When the story turned to Dorne, Spain answered: the Alcázar of Seville became the Water Gardens of House Martell, and the bullring at Osuna the fighting pits of Meereen.

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
  1. The third season opens in Astapor, where Daenerys comes to buy the Unsullied, renowned eunuch soldiers. The production used the Moroccan port of Essaouira for the city: the Unsullied line up on the ramparts of the Skala de la Ville, the sea bastion running along the northern cliffs, and in the closing scene the Genoese-built citadel by the harbour frames the moment Barristan Selmy reveals himself to her. Both structures are still there, and the medina around them has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

Visitor guidance: The Skala ramparts run along the old town's sea wall above the harbour, inside the medina UNESCO listed in 2001.

  2. Morocco was a new location for the third season, and this ksar took Yunkai, the city Daenerys reaches with an army at her back. In the third episode she tells Jorah she will take the city to free its 200,000 slaves, and her camp is built at a nearby spot called Little Barrage. It is Moroccan earthen clay architecture in its purest form: fortified since the Almoravid period, a World Heritage Site since 1987, and restored in modern times in part because films kept coming. A handful of families still live in the old houses.

Visitor guidance: The ksar lies near Ouarzazate, and only a few families still inhabit the old houses.

  3. In October 2014 the crew came to Seville for Dorne, and the royal Alcázar became the Water Gardens, the private estate of House Martell and home of Prince Doran. Parts of four fifth-season episodes were shot inside it. The spaces that appear on screen are Mercury's Pool and the Grotto Gallery, the Ambassadors' Hall, the Baths of Maria de Padilla and the Pavilion of Carlos V. The season's Dorne strand ends in the finale, when Myrcella collapses in Jaime's arms, killed by a poison Ellaria put in her lipstick.

Visitor guidance: The upper storeys are still the Spanish royal family's residence when they are in Seville, and the palace is administered by Patrimonio Nacional.

  4. The bullring at Osuna stood in for Daznak's Pit in Meereen, where Daenerys watches Jorah fight before the Sons of the Harpy attack the stadium in the ninth episode and she is rescued by Jorah and her largest dragon, Drogon. Many of the town's inhabitants worked as extras on the twelve-day shoot in October 2014, and HBO's A Day in the Life used Osuna as one of three season 5 sets. The ring itself has stopped hosting bullfighting.

Visitor guidance: The ring is in the centre of Osuna; the production also used La Colegiata and the old University in the town.

  5. HBO filmed sixth-season scenes at Girona Cathedral and its steps, which, with visual effects, stood in for the Great Sept of Baelor in two episodes, "Blood of My Blood" and "The Winds of Winter". The second of those carries the season's cruellest sequence: Cersei's wildfire tears the Sept apart, killing everyone inside, Margaery and Loras and Mace Tyrell among them, together with Kevan Lannister, Lancel and the High Sparrow. Effects altered parts of both the building and the staircase; the great staircase in front of the Baroque façade was completed in 1607.

Visitor guidance: Climb the staircase of 1607 to the Baroque façade; inside is the widest Gothic nave in the world, 23 metres across.

  6. The seventh-season finale sent the producers to the Roman ruins of Itálica, near Santiponce, which stood in for the ruined Dragonpit. The sequence took six days to shoot, rehearsed first in Belfast and then filmed in Spain in autumn 2016. In it Cersei and Daenerys meet with their entourages in the ruined pit, and Jon Snow and the Hound present the captured wight as proof that the White Walkers are real. What the Romans built there is still the point of the visit: the amphitheatre was the third largest in the Empire.

Visitor guidance: The amphitheatre is inside the archaeological site at Santiponce, in the province of Seville.

The Witcher: Season One from Hungary to the Canaries

Netflix's Continent was built from a patchwork of real places: a Hungarian fort, a village museum, a former monastery, Canary Islands coasts and a ruined Polish castle. This route follows season one's shoot from October 2018 to May 2019: Cintra and Marnadal in Hungary, Aretuza and Ciri's desert in the Canary Islands, and Sodden Hill at Ogrodzieniec in Poland. Filming spots only; the Continent itself is invented.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Islands Behind the Sets

Port Royal and Tortuga were built on a quiet St Vincent bay, Cannibal Island is Dominican rainforest, and a private Bahamian cay sits behind a famous duel. This route follows the shoots from St Vincent in 2002 through Dominica in 2005 to Grand Bahama, where the ships were filmed in a hurricane season. Most pins mark areas, not exact sets; the sets themselves were built and taken down.

Parasite: Bong Joon-ho's Seoul

Bong Joon-ho's celebrated thriller follows the Kim family from a semi-basement flat to a rich family's villa, and the film's stairs make the class divide physical. The real shops, stairs and tunnel behind those scenes can still be walked across Seoul. The route runs from a corner store in Ahyeon-dong to the Jahamun Tunnel and the Goyang flood set. Both family homes were sets, so the houses themselves are not on the map.
