What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. Uranohoshi is a small private girls' school on the tip of a cape near Uchiura, with fewer than 100 students and a closure hanging over it. Nine students rise up to save it by forming a school idol group. The school is fictional, but the building is real: Nagaizaki Junior High, on top of the Nagaizaki headland among tangerine groves. Fans have trespassed here, so enjoy it from the lanes outside and keep clear of the grounds.

Location precision: The anime's school is invented; the pin marks Nagaizaki Junior High, the real school it is modelled on.

  2. Chika, the heroine, comes from a hot-spring inn called Tochimai, where she is the youngest of three sisters. The name belongs to the story, but the model is a real inn in Uchiura, Yasudaya Ryokan. After the anime aired, guests at the inn surged. It is a working business, so treat the pin as a landmark to see from the road.

  3. Kanan lives with her grandfather, who runs a dive shop on the island of Awashima. On screen the Kaeru-kan of Awashima Marine Park plays that dive shop, and the Wyndham Grand Awashima stands in for Hotel Ohara, the best hotel in Uchiura and the home of Mari's family. Today the island is reached by a connecting ferry; the old sea cable car stopped in 2008 and was later abolished.

  4. Numazu Station appears in the series itself. Several of the characters are set to live in the streets around it. Since 2023 JR Central has repeatedly run tie-in events here, with decorations inside the station, wrapping on the south building and boards on the north building. Start here before heading out towards Uchiura and the island.

Visitor guidance: A working JR station; the anime tie-in decorations were on both exit buildings.

  5. The aquarium park appears under its real name in the anime and in the music video for the single Koi ni Naritai AQUARIUM. In episode 4 of season 2, "Dia-san to Yobanaide", all nine girls take part-time jobs there, and the park is on screen throughout the episode. A bus runs from Izu-Nagaoka Station to the park entrance.

  6. In the film The School Idol Movie Over the Rainbow, Uranohoshi is closed, and its students transfer to Shizuma High, a large school in the centre of Numazu. Shizuma is fictional too: it is modelled on Numazu Chuo High School. Where Uranohoshi sat on a quiet cape, Shizuma stands in the middle of the city, a very different setting.

Laid-Back Camp: Yamanashi Campsites Around Fuji

Yurucamp (ゆるキャン△) sends a handful of schoolgirls camping around Mount Fuji, and most of what they visit is real. This route follows eight places from the series, from Lake Motosu to the Mizugaki area. Campsite and shop names are often changed on screen, so each stop names the real place it is modelled on.

Hyouka: Takayama and Hida on Screen

The anime Hyouka is set in a fictional town, but its backdrops are real streets in Takayama, in the mountains of Gifu. The author's home town became the model, and the local tourism board publishes an official pilgrimage model course. This route follows six places from the opening title to the final episode: the river and morning market, the school-route crossing, the Old Town, the library, the hill shrine and the festival shrine outside town. Where the story renames a place, the pin marks the real one.

Coco: The Places Behind Santa Cecilia

Pixar's Coco follows the boy Miguel from his shoemaking family's town of Santa Cecilia into the Land of the Dead on the Day of the Dead. Neither world exists on a map, but the filmmakers drew on real Mexican villages, families and festivals, and Mexican guides have since linked more places to it. This route follows five of those places in the order the story needs them. Almost every link is an inspiration, not a filming location, and the pins say so.
