What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The story begins here. In episode 1, Rin is camping at Lake Motosu when she meets Nadeshiko, who is in trouble. The series blurs the campsite's name, but the facility on screen is modelled on Koan Campsite in Minobu, and the road sign at the junction of National Route 300 and Prefectural Route 709 is drawn from life. A side story later brings Rin back to the lake for a day camp.

Visitor guidance: The campsite is not named on screen; the facility is modelled on Koan Campsite. Check its own page before you travel.

  2. The first group trip starts at Yamanashi-shi station, where Nadeshiko, Chiaki and Aoi meet before setting off. Their stop in town is the "Fuefuki Park" of the story, modelled on this fruit park. They eat sweets here and look at the night view of the Kofu Basin, a quiet scene before the camping begins.

  3. After the park the trio bathe at "Hottokeya Onsen", the story's stand-in for Hottarakashi Onsen, and pitch their tents at a campsite the story calls Eastwood, which is modelled on the real Pinewood Campsite. A later manga chapter adds a small aside: firewood at Eastwood, once free, is no longer free, and a new campsite has opened near the onsen.

  4. Rin and Nadeshiko make Lake Shibire their camp for the night. There they meet Toba, who is camping with her younger sister. The lodge on screen is modelled on the real Suimeiso (水明荘), but the anime gives it an invented name, Kimyoso (木明荘), so the label will not match anything you find on a map.

Visitor guidance: The lodge name used in the anime is invented; on a map, look for Suimeiso (水明荘).

  5. A school-day stop. Nadeshiko, Chiaki and Aoi get off at Minobu station on the way home and wander the town eating Minobu manju. The shopping street in front of the station is modelled on Shonin-dori. The outdoor shop they visit, Caribou, is an invention: in Minobu you will find no shop like it, only the street it was drawn from.

  6. Chiaki, Aoi and Ena camp at "Oomamamisaki Campsite", the story's version of Misaki Campsite on Lake Yamanaka. Before that they bathe at "Akafuji no Yu", based on Yamanakako Benifuji no Yu. They pick the site in midwinter without thinking how altitude lowers the temperature, and Toba is nearly pulled into the commotion.

Location precision: The anime's campsite name is invented and the exact pitch is not mapped, so the pin marks Lake Yamanaka rather than the campsite.

  7. In the second season both Rin and Sakura come to Akasawa-juku. Rin, the first to arrive and on her own, rests in a cafe modelled on the old-house cafe Shimizuya.

  8. Chiaki, Aoi, Ena and Toba camp at a site modelled on Mizugaki Nature Park Campsite. Three of them buy food at a farm-produce shop in Akeno and eat curry in its second-floor restaurant. They also eat yakitori near Lake Mizugaki before heading to the campsite. The story then moves on to a hot spring and a meeting with Toba at the campsite.

Location precision: The pin marks Mizugaki Nature Park from a map search; the campsite inside the park is not pinned separately.

Visitor guidance: The campsite sits in Mizugaki Nature Park; check its own page before you go.

Hyouka: Takayama and Hida on Screen

The anime Hyouka is set in a fictional town, but its backdrops are real streets in Takayama, in the mountains of Gifu. The author's home town became the model, and the local tourism board publishes an official pilgrimage model course. This route follows six places from the opening title to the final episode: the river and morning market, the school-route crossing, the Old Town, the library, the hill shrine and the festival shrine outside town. Where the story renames a place, the pin marks the real one.

Coco: The Places Behind Santa Cecilia

Pixar's Coco follows the boy Miguel from his shoemaking family's town of Santa Cecilia into the Land of the Dead on the Day of the Dead. Neither world exists on a map, but the filmmakers drew on real Mexican villages, families and festivals, and Mexican guides have since linked more places to it. This route follows five of those places in the order the story needs them. Almost every link is an inspiration, not a filming location, and the pins say so.

Roma: Cleo's Mexico City, 1970–71

In Alfonso Cuarón's Roma, a live-in maid named Cleo moves through a year of heartbreak in Mexico City's Colonia Roma, from her employers' house on Tepeji Street to the street violence of 10 June 1971 and a rescue on the beach at Tuxpan. Cuarón built the story from his own childhood memories. The route follows the film in order across five places: the house, the Teatro Metropólitan, a rebuilt cinema corner, the Corpus Christi massacre site and the beach. Several were rebuilt or filmed elsewhere, so the pins are marked approximate.
