Mamma Mia!: From Skiathos Harbour to the Wedding Chapel
Sophie is about to marry on Kalokairi, a fictional Greek island, and has secretly invited three men to the wedding — any of them could be her real father. Her mother Donna owns the hotel Villa Donna, and the paternity question follows everyone down the aisle.
Five stops on the real islands behind Kalokairi, where principal photography took place from August to September 2007: the town below the villa's hill, the Skiathos harbour where two of the men arrive in identical cabs, the cove of the diary reading and the rock jump, the main beach set with its vanished bar and jetty, and the rock-top chapel of the wedding. One caveat: there is no Villa Donna to visit — the hotel was a Pinewood set.
Contains major story spoilers.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Skopelos town — also just called Skopelos — is the island's main port in a bay on the northern coast, noted for its architectural heritage. Above Glysteri Beach supposedly stands Villa Donna, the hotel owned by Sophie's mother Donna; it is from there that Sophie sends out the three wedding invitations that set the plot in motion. Do not go looking for the villa's front door: the whole hotel was a complete set built on Pinewood's 007 stage.
Location precision: Villa Donna was a studio set; the pin marks the port town below the Glysteri hill where the villa supposedly stands.
Visitor guidance: Skopelos town is the island's main ferry port and the base for reaching Glysteri Beach.

Sophie has secretly invited three possible fathers to her wedding on the fictional island of Kalokairi, and two of them land here, on the neighbouring island: Harry and Sam step off in identical cabs at the Old Port on Skiathos, west of Skopelos. Most of the film's outdoor scenes were shot on these two islands. Skiathos town holds 4,883 people in the east of the island, and a regular boat service links it with the rest of the Sporades — the same way most visitors still arrive.
Location precision: The film names only the harbour; the pin marks the port of Skiathos town, where the arrival was shot.
Visitor guidance: The Old Port is Skiathos town's harbour; boats link it with the rest of the Sporades.

Glysteri lies on the northern coast of Skopelos and does double duty in the film. It is where Sophie reads the diary to her friends, and where she, Bill, Harry and Sam leap from the rocks into the sea during Our Last Summer, after the sail around Kalokairi aboard Bill's sailboat. The rocky peninsula above the beach is not easily accessible, so admire the leap from the sand: like the island's other beaches, Glysteri is reached by road or trail.
Location precision: The diary scene, the rock leap and the Villa hill share one cove; the pin marks Glysteri Beach.
Visitor guidance: Reached by road or trail from Skopelos town; the rocky peninsula above the beach is not easily accessible.

Kastani, on the southwest coast, was the film's main location site: the producers built a beach bar and a jetty along it, then removed both set pieces after production wrapped. The bar served Does Your Mother Know?, and it is also where Sky and Sophie sing Lay All Your Love On Me. Kastani lies alongside Milia on the island's western coast — swim in, but don't expect the bar.
Location precision: The beach bar and jetty were removed after filming; the pin marks Kastani Beach itself.
Visitor guidance: A southwest-coast beach reached by road; the film's bar and jetty are gone.

Of the island's more than 360 churches and chapels, the film chose the chapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos near Glossa, perched atop a 100 metre promontory: the wedding procession was filmed here, and the bridal party and guests enter the chapel for the ceremony. The building was glammed up for the movie, and the interior is a set built at Pinewood. At the wedding Sam proposes to Donna, divorced and still in love, and she accepts — they marry on the spot.
Visitor guidance: The island is now a top wedding destination — go early; the chapel stands atop a 100 metre promontory.
