Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The film opens in Budapest, where IMF agent Trevor Hanaway is killed by assassin Sabine Moreau, who steals Russian nuclear launch codes. Budapest is only set up by an aerial shot of Keleti station; the scene itself was shot in the recently renovated Art Nouveau departures hall of Prague's main railway station. The station is the largest Art Nouveau monument in the Czech Republic, and its Art Nouveau building and hall were built between 1901 and 1909.

Visitor guidance: The Art Nouveau building is a working station on Wilsonova; look up at the hall and the dome.

  2. Ethan Hunt's team is ordered to infiltrate the Kremlin for information on Cobalt, and a bomb then destroys it. The wide shots of Red Square are real Moscow, but the courtyard Hunt and Benji stride through is the Second Courtyard of Prague Castle. Built in the 9th century, the castle is the official residence and workplace of the Czech president, and it is the most visited tourist attraction in the Czech Republic.

Location precision: The pin marks Prague Castle as a whole; the Second Courtyard is one of several inside it.

Visitor guidance: Prague Castle is the most visited attraction in the Czech Republic, so expect company in the courtyards.

  3. Ethan is arrested by SVR agent Anatoly Sidorov and blamed for the Kremlin bombing. Later the IMF Secretary's car comes under gun attack and plunges into the River Vltava from Mánes Bridge. The bridge is a road and tramway bridge over the Vltava in Prague, connecting the Aleš Embankment and Rudolfinum to the Lesser Quarter (Malá Strana).

  4. In Dubai the team swaps launch codes inside the Burj Khalifa; the exchange goes wrong, and Ethan flees the tower while Sidorov fails to apprehend him. Cruise appears to free-solo climb the glass with special gloves, but he was securely attached to the building at all times by multiple cables, which Industrial Light & Magic digitally erased in post-production. Patton and Seydoux also skipped stunt doubles for their fight scene at the tower. The Burj Khalifa has been the world's tallest building since 2011.

Visitor guidance: An outdoor observation deck, At the Top, sits on the 124th floor.

  5. After the exchange goes wrong, Ethan chases Wistrom into a sandstorm, where Wistrom reveals himself to be a masked Hendricks and escapes. The chase through the sandstorm ends at Meydan Bridge, a VIP entrance to Meydan Racecourse. The racecourse opened on 27 March 2010, and its grandstand can accommodate over 60,000 spectators.

  6. In Mumbai the team chases Hendricks and the launch device, using an old satellite owned by Indian media tycoon Brij Nath, but the Mumbai streets are Vancouver. Hunt's chase through the packed streets was filmed on Canada Place at Burrard Street, in front of the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building, which was modified to double as downtown Mumbai. The West Building opened in 2009 and hosted the International Broadcast Centre for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

  7. The story ends in Seattle, where Ethan assembles his team for another mission from Luther Stickell. The Seattle pier where the team meets up to unwind is really Granville Island in Vancouver, the location for the film's finale. The island includes a public market, restaurants, a marina and a hotel.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout: Paris, London and "Kashmir"

Mission: Impossible – Fallout was filmed across Paris, London, New Zealand and Norway, from the Grand Palais and St Paul's Cathedral to the cliff of Preikestolen. Ethan Hunt chases stolen plutonium cores through real streets, rooftops and a fjord-side dream. The route follows the film's order: the Paris gala and convoy chase, the London rooftop run, then the "Kashmir" finale, shot near Queenstown and on Norway's Pulpit Rock. The HALO jump was filmed in Abu Dhabi, so it has no stop.

Out of Africa: Karen Blixen's Kenya

Out of Africa was filmed around Nairobi and the Ngong Hills in Kenya, with the Danish scenes shot at Castle Rising in Norfolk, England. Sydney Pollack's 1985 film, based on Karen Blixen's memoir, uses the Muthaiga Country Club, the coffee farm that is now the Karen Blixen Museum and the Chyulu Hills standing in for the Ngong Hills. This route follows Blixen's years in Kenya and the places the film made famous: the railway museum whose locomotive pulls the opening train, the club where Farah is turned away, the farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills, the Norfolk castle that plays Denmark, Voi Airport where Denys Finch Hatton's plane went down, and the obelisk grave on the hillside above Nairobi.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba): From Kamado Shrine to the Infinity Castle

Demon Slayer is set in Taisho-era Japan, and fans trace its real places from the Kamado shrines of Dazaifu and Beppu to Mt. Kumotori and Asakusa. Tanjiro's story runs from Mt. Kumotori to the Infinity Castle, and the route follows the fan trail in story order: two Kamado shrines, the mountain where he burned charcoal, the boulder he had to cut, the wisteria park fans read as the Final Selection, Asakusa and Yoshiwara, Ginzan Onsen as the Swordsmith Village, and the Aizu ryokan whose lobby looks like the Infinity Castle. Most are working shrines, streets and businesses; visit quietly.
