Rainbow Six Siege: Real Places Behind the Maps

Rainbow Six Siege borrows from the real world: the Consulate map echoes the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege in London, Favela is based on Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro, and Mok Myeok Tower is loosely based on Lotte World Tower in Seoul.

What do the location labels mean?
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. While building Siege, the team looked at real-life examples of sieges, and the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege inspired the map Consulate. The real event began when six armed men stormed the Iranian embassy on Prince's Gate in South Kensington, London, and lasted from 30 April to 5 May 1980. It ended when the SAS went in, abseiling from the roof and forcing entry through the windows.

Location precision: Consulate is inspired by the 1980 siege rather than a copy of the building; the pin marks the Prince's Gate area.

  2. The Operation Skull Rain DLC came with two Brazilian operators and a map set in a Brazilian favela. That map, Favela, is based on Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro. Rocinha is built on a steep hillside overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

Location precision: Favela is based on Rocinha as a whole, not on one street or house.

  3. Operation White Noise brought a South Korean observation tower set far above Seoul. Mok Myeok Tower is loosely based on the real-life Lotte World Tower, and players battle through a nightclub, an art gallery and a restaurant while rappelling down and through access points. The real tower is a 123-story, 555-metre skyscraper in Seoul, and it opened to the public on 3 April 2017.

Location precision: The map is only loosely based on Lotte World Tower; the pin marks the real tower.

Visitor guidance: Lotte World Tower is open to the public.

  4. In November 2018 Ubisoft announced that Siege was heading to Morocco for Operation Wind Bastion. It added two Moroccan operators and a map called Fortress, the first ever closely linked to an Operator. The map is modeled after the distinct architecture of a Moroccan Kasbah and is designed to give operators a variety of tactics. Ubisoft names no single real kasbah, so the pin sits at the centre of the country.

Location precision: The source names the architecture style, not a specific kasbah; the pin is a country-level marker.

  5. In the story, two recruits head to Detroit to investigate the Legion's relation with a company named POLARIS. Inside the company building they meet enemy forces and are attacked by Phobos, who destroys the building with planted explosives. Detroit is a real city on the bank of the Detroit River, across from the Canadian city of Windsor, Ontario. The story gives no street address for the company, so the pin marks the city centre only.

Location precision: The story names Detroit but no address for the POLARIS building; the pin marks the city.

Battlefield V: From Narvik to Nijmegen

Battlefield V sends you to Narvik in Norway, Tobruk in Libya, Kasserine Pass in Tunisia, Rjukan in Norway and the Nijmegen railway bridge in the Netherlands, all real places of the war. The game's prologue jumps between fronts, and the "Nordlys" war story follows a Norwegian resistance fight over heavy water. This route lines up those settings with the real history of each place. Only the places named in the game's own plot summary are included.

Battlefield 3 and 4: From Tehran to Shanghai

Battlefield 3 is set in Tehran, Paris and New York, and Battlefield 4 in Shanghai and the Kunlun Mountains. The campaigns follow Marines from Sulaymaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan to a nuclear plot that ends in Times Square. The route follows the two campaigns in story order across six real places, from Mehrabad Airport in Tehran to central Shanghai. Most stops are city-level pins, because the games name cities rather than streets.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare — London to Chicago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) and Modern Warfare II (2022) are set in real cities such as London, Saint Petersburg, Amsterdam and Chicago, plus Moldova and Georgia, alongside invented countries. The route follows the campaigns in story order: the attack on Piccadilly Circus and the Camden Town raid, the trail through Saint Petersburg, Baurci and Borjomi, then the courier chase in Amsterdam and the finale in Chicago. Invented countries are left off the map, and the pins mark each real city or town, not a mission's exact setting.
