Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. Shaun of the Dead opens in the Crouch End area of London, where 29-year-old sales advisor Shaun is disrespected by his colleagues. Crouch End is where the film is set, though the crew shot exteriors across North London, including Highgate, Finsbury Park and East Finchley. The film was shot over nine weeks between May and July 2003, on location and at Ealing Studios; the electrical shop where Shaun works is a real shop in North Finchley.

Location precision: The film is set across Crouch End, but exteriors were shot in several North London districts; the pin marks the district centre.

  2. Shaun and Ed plan to wait out the crisis at The Winchester, their favourite pub. Inside, Shaun finds that the Winchester rifle above the bar actually works. The scenes in and around the pub were shot at the Duke of Albany pub in New Cross, South London. The three-storey Victorian building closed and was turned into flats in 2008.

Location precision: The Winchester exists only in the story; it was filmed at a New Cross pub that has since become flats, so no pin is given.

  3. Hot Fuzz was filmed largely in Wells, which became the fictional village of Sandford. Wright wanted St Cuthbert's to be the village centre, so Wells Cathedral was digitally painted out of every shot. At the church fete, journalist Tim Messenger is killed when a cloaked figure dislodges masonry from the tower. A lightning strike in the early 1970s dropped a pinnacle through the nave roof, which may have inspired the scene.

  4. Village florist Leslie Tiller plans to sell her land to the development partners, and she pays for it: a cloaked figure murders her with her own garden shears. The flower shop scene was filmed at Finchley Nurseries in Mill Hill, next to Hendon, while the rest of the village was Wells. Angel suspects the deaths are linked to a recent property deal. Filming lasted eleven weeks from 19 March 2006.

Location precision: The shop is a set in the story; the pin marks the Finchley Nurseries location named by the source in Mill Hill.

  5. In The World's End, Gary King drags his old friends back to Newton Haven to finish the Golden Mile, a pub crawl of 12 pubs. In Letchworth, several premises stood in for those pubs, and the Art Deco Broadway Cinema, built in the 1930s, played the Mermaid. It was also the first cinema outside London to screen the film, with over 800 viewers on opening night.

Location precision: Newton Haven is invented; the pin marks the Letchworth cinema that portrayed the Mermaid pub.

  6. Letchworth Garden City railway station received a makeover to become the Hole in the Wall, another of the film's twelve pubs. Filming took place in Hertfordshire, in Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City, chosen partly because their early twentieth-century architecture evoked British science fiction, especially John Wyndham. In the story, the five friends first tried the crawl as teens in 1990 but never reached the final pub, The World's End.

Location precision: The Hole in the Wall exists only in the film; the pin marks the real station that was dressed as the pub.

Braveheart: Glen Nevis and Ireland's Stand-ins

Braveheart's Scotland is partly the real thing and partly Ireland: Wallace's village of Lanark was built in Glen Nevis, but York is Trim Castle, Stirling Bridge was staged on the Curragh and Longshanks' court is Bective Abbey. The route follows seven filming locations in the order of the story, from the Highland glen to the Irish fields, lakes and ruins that stood in for the battles and castles. Most of the shoot moved to Ireland at short notice, so the film's map is split between two countries.

Trainspotting: Edinburgh and Glasgow

Trainspotting is set in Leith, Edinburgh, but was filmed almost entirely in Glasgow: only the opening chase down Princes Street and Calton Road was shot in the capital. Rouken Glen Park, Jordanhill School and a pub on Queen Margaret Drive fill in for Edinburgh, and Corrour station supplies the film's "great outdoors" scene. The route follows Renton and his friends from Leith through the chase, the park, the bar and the school to a remote Highland platform. Where a location guide's pub or a bridge name is uncertain, the stop says so.

Bridget Jones's Diary: Borough Market and London

Bridget Jones's Diary is set and filmed around Borough Market in south London, with Shad Thames, the Royal Courts of Justice and Cornhill on the way. The film moves Bridget from Holland Park to a flat above the Globe pub, where the story begins. This route follows the film's story through eight London and country locations: the book launch at the ICA, the first date at Shad Thames, the mini-break at Stoke Park, the anniversary party at Syon House and the snowy finale. The film was shot over six weeks in and around London in 2000.
