The Last of Us Part II: Three Days in Seattle

Tommy sets out for Seattle to hunt Abby, and Ellie and Dina follow him into a ruined city where the WLF militia and a cult, the Seraphites, fight for control. The Last of Us Part II plays the same three days twice: first as Ellie, then as Abby. The city is the real one: Naughty Dog chose Seattle for its hills and varied weather, and its artists travelled there to study the architecture, vegetation and topography.

Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. On their first day in the city, Ellie and Dina head for a domed building they call the Dome and find a synagogue that has been turned into a ration distribution centre. It is where the two of them have one of their first deep conversations about faith and the state of the world. The building's exterior is the Daniels Recital Hall: a church sanctuary built in 1908 on the southwest corner of Fifth Avenue and Marion Street, reopened as a recital hall in 2009 that uses the old church acoustics.

Visitor guidance: The hall hosts concerts in its old church sanctuary.

  2. Cornered in the street on her first day, Ellie takes shelter in the Pinnacle Theatre with Dina, and the pair keep coming back to it after every trip out into the city. It is in there that Ellie finally admits she is immune and learns that Dina is pregnant; it is also where the arc ends, with Abby walking in, killing Jesse, shooting Tommy and overpowering both women before letting them go. The game even copies the real theatre's sign. It belongs to the Paramount on Pine Street, a 2,807-seat venue that opened in 1928 and sits on the National Register.

Visitor guidance: The Paramount is a performing arts venue at 9th Avenue and Pine Street; its sign is the one the game copies.

  3. One of the game's most unpleasant set pieces happens in the city's convention centre. You come in through a high window and drop to the ground floor through a series of jumps, and then have to deal with a stalker: a second-stage Infected that moves incredibly fast, stays out of sight until it is far too late, and kills almost instantly. The game calls it the Seattle Conference Center. It is the real Washington State Convention Center, whose Arch building runs along Pike Street.

Visitor guidance: The convention centre hosts PAX West and Emerald City Comic Con.

  4. The game's Lakehill Hospital appears in both halves of the story. In Ellie's run she tracks a WLF member, Nora Harris, to the hospital and tortures her for information about Abby. In Abby's, the building is overrun by the Infected, and Abby and Lev cross it for the medical supplies needed to amputate Yara's arm. The hospital is fictional, but its inspiration is real: Harborview Medical Center, King County's public hospital on First Hill, run by UW Medicine.

Location precision: The game names only 'the hospital'; the pin marks Harborview, the real hospital its fictional Lakehill is modelled on.

Visitor guidance: Harborview is a working hospital, not a sightseeing stop; look at it from outside.

  5. After being rescued by Lev, Yara's younger brother, Abby reaches the aquarium and finds Owen there; he plans to sail to Santa Barbara, where the Fireflies are supposedly regrouping. Later Abby and Lev come back to find Owen and his pregnant girlfriend Mel dead, with a map leading to Ellie's theatre hideout. On Ellie's side of the story she is the one who came here, to Abby's hideout, and killed them both. The real Seattle Aquarium has stood on the Elliott Bay waterfront since 1977.

Visitor guidance: The aquarium is on the waterfront at Pier 59.

  6. Abby's home in the game's Seattle is inside a stadium, where the WLF have turned a sports venue into somewhere to live: the field itself opens out in front of her when she comes out inside it, and there is livestock, produce and a school for younger children inside the shell. The game calls it the SoundView Stadium and models it on Lumen Field, in the SoDo district, where the Seahawks and the Sounders still play in front of 68,740.

Location precision: The game's stadium is the renamed SoundView Stadium; the pin marks Lumen Field, the real venue the game models it on.

Visitor guidance: Lumen Field is in the SoDo district, south of downtown.

  7. In a memory, a younger Abby plays around in one of the wheel's cabins with Owen, and the drop into the water far below becomes the whole scene. She is dealing with a fear of heights; he talks her into the leap, and the game puts you in Abby's shoes, looking over the edge before she jumps. The real Seattle Great Wheel has stood at Pier 57 on Elliott Bay since June 2012: 53 metres tall, and then the tallest Ferris wheel on the West Coast.

Visitor guidance: The wheel is on the Elliott Bay waterfront at Pier 57.

  8. The international district has a short appearance in the game, and players can walk right up to its gate: the Historic Chinatown Gate, which stands at the west end of South King Street, 45 feet tall and made of steel and plaster. Abby has to make her way through the area, dealing with human enemies and Infected alike. The real gate was unveiled on 9 February 2008 and still stands over the street, in the district it marks.

Visitor guidance: The gate is a street landmark, not a building: stand under it on South King Street. The Wing Luke Museum is nearby in the district.

  9. Infiltrating the Seraphite island to rescue Lev, Abby sees the Space Needle in the distance, and the way the game's water surrounds it seems to imply that the whole of Belltown has gone completely underwater. The real tower stands at 400 Broad Street in Lower Queen Anne: 605 feet high, built in the Seattle Center for the 1962 World's Fair, and once the tallest building west of the Mississippi. Elevators take visitors up to an observation deck 520 feet above the ground in 41 seconds.

Visitor guidance: The observation deck is open to visitors, 520 feet up.

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag: Nassau and the Observatory

In 1715 a Welsh pirate kills an Assassin, steals his clothes and his name, and ends up sitting in his place at a meeting of Templars in Havana. That is how Edward Kenway enters the Golden Age of Piracy: he takes a ship, the Jackdaw, builds a pirate brotherhood in Nassau, loses his friends to the gallows and to each other, and spends the rest of the story chasing a device called the Observatory that can watch anyone on earth. Black Flag sets all of it in real ports — Havana, Nassau, Kingston, Port Royal — and then leaves the Caribbean for the Maya ruins of Tulum, an island in the Gulf of Guinea and a final scene in London. The route follows Edward from the harbour where Torres's plot starts, through the pirate republic and the governor who ends it, to the Kingston house where Mary Read drops the disguise, the jail at Port Royal, Príncipe, where the Sage is waiting, and Covent Garden. Most stops mark a real landmark in the town the game rebuilds.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Chasing the Order in England

Assassin's Creed Valhalla brings the Viking Eivor and their clan to Anglo-Saxon England, where Hytham asks for help ridding the land of the Order of the Ancients. Following tip-offs from an informant who signs himself the "Poor Fellow-Soldier of Christ", Eivor hunts Order members from Grantebridge to Jorvik and Wincestre. The route visits the real places behind the game's: Cambridge, where the jarlskona Soma takes back her town; York, the capital of Viking Britain; the docks of Repton, where the Great Heathen Army wintered; Alfred's Winchester; the battle at Chippenham in 878; and Athelney, where the informant's identity is finally revealed. All six can be visited today.

GTA IV: The Real New York Behind Liberty City

Liberty City is New York with the labels peeled off. Grand Theft Auto IV rebuilds four of the boroughs, borrows New Jersey for the state across the river, and copies in the Statue of Liberty, the Coney Island Cyclone, the Manhattan Bridge, Times Square and the Empire State Building — then renames nearly all of them, so the game's Liberty statue holds a takeaway coffee instead of a torch. The story is set in 2008, the year the game arrived. This route pins nine real places behind those names: the triumphal arch at Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza, the wooden Cyclone at Coney Island, the Manhattan Bridge as the Algonquin Bridge, Brighton Beach as Hove Beach, the surviving 1964 World's Fair site in Queens, and three Manhattan landmarks — Middle Park, Star Junction and the Rotterdam Tower. Each stop names the in-game location it stands in for. One caveat: Rockstar deliberately avoided a precise recreation of New York, so expect the landmarks, not the street plan.
