In This Corner of the World: Kure and Hiroshima
In This Corner of the World is set in Hiroshima and Kure, Japan, during the Second World War. Suzu Urano grows up in Eba, sketches at the Atomic Bomb Dome building, and marries into a family in the naval port of Kure.
The route follows Fumiyo Kōno's story from Suzu's hometown of Eba to the Kure Naval Arsenal and Niko Park, where the Hōjō family goes to see the cherry blossoms in spring 1945. Kure's Hōjō home is only approximately placed.

Suzu's story starts in Eba, the Hiroshima district where her family, the Uranos, live. It sits at the mouth of the Ota River, where the land runs long and narrow down to Hiroshima Bay. Later, with Kure under air raids, Suzu wonders whether she should go back to Eba, a place not yet bombed.

Back in Hiroshima after her wedding, Suzu sketches at the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. By 1944 the building had stopped working as an exhibition hall and held government offices. Czech architect Jan Letzel designed it, and it opened in 1915 with a distinctive dome. On 6 August 1945 the building kept its shape through the atomic bombing, and it is now known as the Atomic Bomb Dome.
Советы для посещения: The Dome is a landmark in central Hiroshima and can be seen from outside.

Suzu marries Shūsaku, a navy civilian in Kure, and joins his family. The Hōjō house stands in Kami-naganoki-chō, at the northern end of old Kure. Kure is a large port city on the Seto Inland Sea, within one hour by local train from Hiroshima, and widely known as the largest base of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Kure is home to the Naval Arsenal, where Suzu's father-in-law Entarō used to work. The battleships Yamato and Nagato were designed and built here. In 1945 US air raids begin and heavily attack warships and naval facilities in Kure. Over 70% of the arsenal's buildings and equipment were destroyed during the Pacific War, and it passed into civilian hands after Japan's surrender.

In spring 1945 the Hōjō family goes to Niko Park for hanami, the cherry blossom outing. The park opened in 1916 on a former naval firing range and was one of Kure's prewar cherry blossom spots. During the war, air-raid shelters were dug there. Those shelters can still be seen today.
Советы для посещения: Public park in Kure; the remains of the air-raid shelters can still be seen.
