Makoto Shinkai: The Garden of Words and 5 Centimeters per Second

Two Makoto Shinkai films, two love stories that never quite meet: a rainy-morning friendship in a Tokyo garden, and a boy and girl pulled apart across Japan, from a snowbound station in Tochigi to a rocket island in the south. The route starts with The Garden of Words in Shinjuku Gyoen, then follows 5 Centimeters per Second through its three episodes: Tokyo and Iwafune, Tanegashima, and Tokyo again. Each stop names its film.

Love Live! Sunshine!!: Numazu and Uchiura

Love Live! Sunshine!! is set in a real corner of Shizuoka: the port city of Numazu and the coastal town of Uchiura, where the heroines come from. The route follows the story from the cape-top school and the family inn to Awashima island, the station, the aquarium park and the city school of the film. Some places are real and appear as themselves; the school, the inn and the film's school are invented, and their pins mark the real buildings they are modelled on.

Laid-Back Camp: Yamanashi Campsites Around Fuji

Yurucamp (ゆるキャン△) sends a handful of schoolgirls camping around Mount Fuji, and most of what they visit is real. This route follows eight places from the series, from Lake Motosu to the Mizugaki area. Campsite and shop names are often changed on screen, so each stop names the real place it is modelled on.

Hyouka: Takayama and Hida on Screen

The anime Hyouka is set in a fictional town, but its backdrops are real streets in Takayama, in the mountains of Gifu. The author's home town became the model, and the local tourism board publishes an official pilgrimage model course. This route follows six places from the opening title to the final episode: the river and morning market, the school-route crossing, the Old Town, the library, the hill shrine and the festival shrine outside town. Where the story renames a place, the pin marks the real one.

Coco: The Places Behind Santa Cecilia

Pixar's Coco follows the boy Miguel from his shoemaking family's town of Santa Cecilia into the Land of the Dead on the Day of the Dead. Neither world exists on a map, but the filmmakers drew on real Mexican villages, families and festivals, and Mexican guides have since linked more places to it. This route follows five of those places in the order the story needs them. Almost every link is an inspiration, not a filming location, and the pins say so.

Roma: Cleo's Mexico City, 1970–71

In Alfonso Cuarón's Roma, a live-in maid named Cleo moves through a year of heartbreak in Mexico City's Colonia Roma, from her employers' house on Tepeji Street to the street violence of 10 June 1971 and a rescue on the beach at Tuxpan. Cuarón built the story from his own childhood memories. The route follows the film in order across five places: the house, the Teatro Metropólitan, a rebuilt cinema corner, the Corpus Christi massacre site and the beach. Several were rebuilt or filmed elsewhere, so the pins are marked approximate.

Leone's Westerns: Tabernas and Cabo de Gata

Sergio Leone's "spaghetti westerns" put the American West in southern Spain. Their Almería desert towns and the sets built for those films still stand. The route follows the desert and the white village of Los Albaricoques through three Leone films: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and Once Upon a Time in the West. One stop lies over the border in Granada province.

Almodóvar: Madrid and La Mancha on Screen

Pedro Almodóvar has shot the majority of his films in Madrid, and Madrid's tourism office lists the exact streets, bars and squares where his scenes happened. The route follows eight filming spots in order of release, from the El Rastro bar of Labyrinth of Passion in 1982 to the Comendadoras square of Parallel Mothers in 2021, with one detour to Almagro in La Mancha for Volver.

Doctor Zhivago (1965): Lean's Russia in Spain and Finland

The novel was banned in the Soviet Union, so David Lean could not shoot his epic there. Instead he built Moscow in a field outside Madrid, turned the pine woods of Soria into the Urals and sent a second crew to the snows of Finland. The route follows the story in order, from the dam of the frame story to the ice palace at Varykino, and shows where each scene was really filmed. Most pins mark general areas, not exact camera spots.

Stalker: Tarkovsky's Zone Near Tallinn

Andrei Tarkovsky's Zone, a fenced-off wilderness where a guide takes a writer and a professor toward a Room said to grant wishes, was largely shot around Tallinn, Estonia, among abandoned hydropower plants, a power station and an old chemical works. This route follows the film's story through those places: the factory and power plant seen before the Zone, the gate, the river plants where the journey was shot, a highway bridge and the power station that smokes behind the final homecoming. Exact spots are often unrecorded, so most pins are approximate.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson: Riga as Victorian London

Vasily Livanov and Vitaly Solomin's Soviet Holmes and Watson were made when filming abroad was impossible, so a Riga lane became Baker Street, a Petersburg station became Victoria and a waterfall in Abkhazia became the Reichenbach Falls. The route follows the Lenfilm television films of 1979 to 1986 from the Riga street with the screen 221b to Peterhof, Saint Petersburg, the Gega Waterfall and Tallinn.

The Diamond Arm: Baku as the Soviet Abroad

Semyon Gorbunkov, a modest Soviet economist on his first trip abroad, slips on a watermelon rind in Istanbul, says "Damn it!" and ends up with a smugglers' plaster cast full of jewels on his arm. Gaidai's 1968 comedy needed a foreign city, and found it in Baku. The route follows the film across its filming sites: the old streets and palace of Baku that play Istanbul, then the southern coast and a Moscow wasteland that play the heroes' home town. Only the Baku and Kiselyov Rock stops are pinned to a specific place; the rest are approximate.

Brother and Brother 2: Danila from St Petersburg to Chicago

Danila Bagrov comes home from the First Chechen War, goes to look for his older brother in Saint Petersburg and ends up a hitman by accident. In the sequel he is in Moscow and then Chicago, chasing the men who threaten a dead friend's twin brother. The route follows Danila through Vitebsky Station, the Adamini House, a market and a cemetery in Petersburg, then Moscow and the American stops. Several stops are filming locations standing in for the story's places.

Walking the Streets of Moscow: One Day Across the City

Georgiy Daneliya's 1964 comedy follows one day in the life of Kolya, a night-shift metro builder who cannot stop helping people, and Volodya, a young writer just arrived from Siberia. From a dog bite on a boulevard to a farewell on a metro platform, the two zigzag across Moscow with a wedding, a record shop and a chase through a park on the way. The route follows the film in order through seven places, from Chistoprudny Boulevard to Universitet station. Some scenes were shot in a different street from the one the story names, and the text says where.

The Irony of Fate: Moscow to Leningrad and Back

On New Year's Eve a Moscow surgeon goes to the bathhouse with his friends, wakes up in Leningrad and walks into a flat that looks exactly like his own. The Soviet classic that Russia still watches every 31 December starts as a joke about identical buildings and ends as a love story. The route follows Zhenya's night from his new flat and the banya to the Leningrad airport, the identical building, and the station, then back to Moscow. The caveat: both the "Leningrad" and the "Moscow" houses were shot in the same Moscow district, and the story's street had been renamed years before.

Sound! Euphonium: A Band Season in Uji

Sound! Euphonium follows the Kitauji High School concert band, and its story is set in Uji, Kyoto. The route follows Kumiko's commute on the Keihan Uji Line, crosses Uji Bridge, joins the Agata Festival and climbs Daikichiyama for the view of town. The school itself is fictional, so the route pins a real station in its place.

Initial D: Gunma's Mountain Passes

Takumi Fujiwara delivers tofu every morning in his father's old Toyota AE86, and without knowing it he becomes the fastest downhill driver in Gunma. Shuichi Shigeno's street racing manga sends him against rival teams from mountain after mountain. Some names are fictionalized, but all of the locations in the series are based on actual places in Japan. The route follows them from Mount Haruna, the real Akina, to Akagi, Myōgi and Irohazaka, then returns to the lake and to the museum that keeps the tofu shop's storefront.

Anohana: Chichibu, Where the Friends Meet Again

In Anohana, six childhood friends drift apart after one of them, Menma, dies in an accident. Years later her ghost appears to Jinta, the group's former leader, and asks for a wish to be granted, and the old friends gather again in their hometown of Chichibu, Saitama. The town is real, and the route follows the places the anime shows: the hill and overlook of Hitsujiyama Park, a road beside the railway, two bridges over the Arakawa, the temple where the friends keep gathering, and the festival scaffold where their homemade firework is launched. The secret base itself has no real-life twin.

Weathering with You: Rainy Tokyo, Yoyogi to Shinjuku

It rains on Tokyo all summer, and runaway Hodaka Morishima meets Hina Amano, a girl who can pray the sky clear. Makoto Shinkai's film follows them through real corners of the city: a McDonald's in Kabukichō, a rooftop shrine on an abandoned building, a hillside flat, a fireworks festival and a jewellery shop at Shinjuku Station. Seven stops run from Hodaka's home island to Lumine Shinjuku. Several pins mark a district rather than a spot, and Yoyogi Kaikan was demolished in 2019–20, so that stop is a memory.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Hakone as Tokyo-3

Tokyo-3 is the fortress city of Neon Genesis Evangelion, home of NERV and the battleground against its monstrous enemies. It is fictional, but the series places it on the north shore of Lake Ashi near Sengokuhara, in Hakone, and the town has leaned into the connection ever since. The route follows five real places where the series' scenes and stand-ins meet Hakone, from the Sengokuhara plain to the lake where Tokyo-3 drowns. The city never existed, so each pin marks a real stand-in.

Slam Dunk: The Shōnan Coast

Slam Dunk follows Hanamichi Sakuragi, who joins the Shohoku High School basketball team to impress a girl and turns out to be a natural. Its Shōnan coast is real: a railway crossing from the anime opening, a seaside station renamed for a rival school, and the beach where the film ends. The route runs from the Kamakurakōkōmae crossing to Kugenuma Beach in Fujisawa, with the model for Ryonan High School and the Hiratsuka gymnasium on the way.

Kingdom of Heaven: Balian's Holy Land and Its Sets

Ridley Scott's 2005 epic follows Balian, a French blacksmith turned Baron of Ibelin, from his village to Messina, Jerusalem, Kerak, the desert defeat at Hattin and the siege that ends the film. Every stop pairs a scene with the place where it was shot, or with the real place the scene stands for. The film was made in Spain and Morocco, not the Holy Land, so the route moves between sets and history. Where the film departs from the record, the stop says so: the historical Balian was a prominent lord of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, not a French artisan.

Thelma & Louise: The Road to the Grand Canyon

Two friends set out for a weekend at a fishing cabin, and one violent night at a roadhouse bar turns the trip into a run for Mexico across the American West. Ridley Scott's 1991 film is set on a route from Arkansas to the Grand Canyon, but it was filmed almost entirely in California and Utah, around Bakersfield and Moab, between June and August 1990. This route follows the story in film order through six real places: a Long Beach bar, a Los Angeles motel, a Colorado general store, the desert at Arches, the ghost town of Cisco and the cliff edge at Dead Horse Point. Almost all of them stand in for somewhere else, and each stop says where.

Vertigo: Hitchcock's San Francisco

A retired detective with a fear of heights is hired to follow a friend's wife around San Francisco, because her husband fears she is possessed by Carlotta Valdes, a woman who died in 1857. Hitchcock's 1958 thriller was shot on location in San Francisco, at Mission San Juan Bautista, in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, at Cypress Point on 17-Mile Drive and at Paramount Studios in Hollywood. This route follows the story in film order through nine places: a vanished restaurant, a Nob Hill apartment block, a mission cemetery and an art museum, a fort under the Golden Gate Bridge, a coastal kiss, a mission bell tower and a hotel with a green neon sign.
