Vasily Livanov and Vitaly Solomin's Soviet Holmes and Watson were made when filming abroad was impossible, so a Riga lane became Baker Street, a Petersburg station became Victoria and a waterfall in Abkhazia became the Reichenbach Falls.

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
  1. The Riga street Jauniela stood in for Baker Street; no. 22 played 221b. It is a narrow old-town lane that runs along the east side of the Dome Cathedral. The real Baker Street in London is far wider and busier than the screen version. The same Riga street also appeared as Flower Street in Berne in Seventeen Moments of Spring.

  2. A few steps from Jauniela, Maza Skolas Street supplied more of the Victorian city. A number of scenes of the series were shot here. The film-makers could not shoot abroad in those years, so most buildings on screen are historic ones in Leningrad, Tallinn and Riga, and an old-town lane did the work of a London street. One side of the street today belongs to the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation.

Visitor guidance: A public old-town street, with the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation on one side.

  3. In the 1980 film The King of Blackmail, Holmes goes after Charles Milverton, London's vilest criminal, a blackmailer and extortionist. Holmes cuts a hole in a glass door to open the lock, and then a visitor ends the story: Lady Huxley kills the king of blackmail. Milverton's mansion is the Cottage in Alexandria Park at Peterhof, begun in 1826 on the order of Nicholas I as a summer residence for himself and his wife.

  4. When Holmes flees London in Deadly Fight, Watson follows his instructions and meets him at the station, in a train compartment. The station is Victoria, but the building is Saint Petersburg's Vitebsk station on Zagorodny Prospekt, the oldest surviving railway station in the city and in Russia.

Visitor guidance: A working station at Zagorodny Prospekt 52.

  5. At the climax of Deadly Fight Holmes and Watson visit the Reichenbach Falls, and the detective calls it a well-chosen place. The series shot the fight with Moriarty at the Gega Waterfall in Abkhazia, about 70 metres high by one count and 50 to 55 m by another. The Gega was made to play the Reichenbach.

  6. The Treasures of Agra (1983) draws on The Sign of Four, where Watson first meets Mary Morstan. For a scene in it, Tallinn's St John's church on Freedom Square played the church of St Monica. The church was built in 1867 on the square, which arose on the site of a Swedish bastion in front of the Harju Gate. Tallinn is the third city of the series' filming alongside Riga and Saint Petersburg.

The Diamond Arm: Baku as the Soviet Abroad

Semyon Gorbunkov, a modest Soviet economist on his first trip abroad, slips on a watermelon rind in Istanbul, says "Damn it!" and ends up with a smugglers' plaster cast full of jewels on his arm. The route follows the film across its filming sites: the old streets and palace of Baku that play Istanbul, then the southern coast and a Moscow wasteland that play the heroes' home town.
