The Birds: Filming Locations from San Francisco to Bodega Bay
Hitchcock's The Birds is set in Bodega Bay, California, and filmed there too: the harbor, the Tides Wharf restaurant and the schoolhouse in nearby Bodega are all real places you can find on the map.
The route starts in San Francisco's Union Square, follows Melanie Daniels across the bay to the Brenner farm, and ends with the crows at the schoolhouse and the diner siege. Some Bodega Bay scenes were shot on a studio set, so the pins mark the real places the film borrowed.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
The Birds opens in the city, not the country. Socialite Melanie Daniels is first seen in San Francisco's Union Square, heading to a pet shop where she meets lawyer Mitch Brenner, who wants lovebirds for his sister Cathy's 11th birthday. The pet shop itself was a set at Universal studios in Hollywood.

Melanie rents a boat and crosses the bay to leave the lovebirds at the Brenner farm without being seen. At the wharf, a gull attacks her. Bodega Harbor was the main location Hitchcock used, and several scenes were shot using boats on the water, so the harbor on the map is the one in the movie.

The Brenner home sits across the water from the town. Here Lydia's hens refuse to eat, and here the film ends: a sea of birds gathers around the house Cathy's lovebirds are the only birds that do not attack. The filmmakers used a real home and barn across the bay from Bodega Bay for these scenes.

As Melanie waits outside the schoolhouse, a flock of crows engulfs the jungle gym behind her. The schoolhouse is in the village of Bodega, next to St. Teresa of Avila Church, which also appears in the movie. The building was once a schoolhouse, a community centre and a guest house, and it is now a private residence.

In the film's last day of attacks the locals shelter in the restaurant, where Mitch finds Melanie, and she later takes refuge in a telephone booth as the birds descend. The real Tides Wharf Restaurant stood in for it. It has since expanded into an unrecognisable hotel complex, and the town around it is little more than a cluster of holiday accommodation, so expect a resort rather than the film's harbor diner.
Visitor guidance: The site is now part of a hotel complex on the harbor.
