What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. In the first Olsen Gang film, the target is the Kejseropsats, a German cultural treasure valued at 12 million kroner and shown in Copenhagen. The gang slips into the museum's secured cellar through the sewer system, and the set-piece is staged at Bredgade 68, then the Kunstindustrimuseet. The building is the former Frederick's Hospital of 1757, the museum's home since 1926. Today it houses Designmuseum Danmark, so you can walk through the same address where the gang pulled off their first big heist.

Visitor guidance: Designmuseum Danmark at Bredgade 68 is a public museum.

  2. Olsen-banden i Jylland, from 1971, is one of the few films set outside Copenhagen. In north-west Jutland, Egon has heard of a treasure hidden in an old German bunker, and the gang goes to find it. The film was shot around Vigsø Bugt, east of Hanstholm, and in Hanstholm town. The wartime Hanstholm battery had four 38 cm guns, each in its own bunker, and today part of it is the Bunkermuseum Hanstholm.

Location precision: The film was shot around Vigsø Bugt and in Hanstholm town; the pin marks the Bunkermuseum Hanstholm, not a named film set.

  3. In Olsen-banden ser rødt (1976), the eighth film, the gang travels to Borreholm to steal the original vase. The castle is Vallø Slot near Køge. There Egon is walled into the castle cellar and has to be rescued by Benny and Kjeld. Borreholm exists only in the story; the real Vallø plays it on screen. The castle still provides housing for women of the Danish nobility.

  4. In Olsen-banden ser rødt the Royal Theatre is a central location. During a gala on the Old Stage, the gang breaks through four walls of the Royal Theatre on Kongens Nytorv, with ever noisier methods hidden under the overture. The music is Kuhlau's Elverhøj overture. Their goal is the lift to a private box. The theatre still stands on the square and stages performances.

Visitor guidance: The theatre is on Kongens Nytorv; the square is open to all.

  5. In The Olsen Gang Goes to War (1978), Copenhagen City Hall is a main location. The famous scene shows Egon tied up outside the city hall tower clock. Benny also opens a Nyrop safe at the city hall with Egon's equipment. Inside, the City Hall houses Jens Olsen's World Clock.

Nord bei Nordwest: Filming Locations of Schwanitz

The route visits five real places: the Priwall, the harbour of Orth with the houseboat, the vet practice in Neuengamme, Petersdorf church and the Hotel zur Post in Geesthacht. Schwanitz itself cannot be visited, and some filming places are private.

Australia (2008): Kimberley to Bowen

Baz Luhrmann's Australia is set in 1939-1942 on the fictional Faraway Downs and in wartime Darwin, but it was filmed around Carlton Hill Station and Kununurra in the Kimberley, in Bowen, Queensland, and at Stokes Hill Wharf in Darwin. This route follows the cattle drive from the Kimberley homestead to Darwin and the 1942 bombing, with the real places that stood in for each scene. Several settings were doubles: Darwin's Government House is Sydney's Strickland House, and Bowen plays 1940s Darwin.

Mad Max: Fury Road Filming Locations in Namibia

Mad Max: Fury Road was filmed mostly in Namibia, around Swakopmund, Henties Bay, Cape Cross and Walvis Bay, with the Citadel built as sets in Cape Town and Sydney. The production first planned to shoot at Broken Hill in Australia, but heavy rain had turned the desert green, so the wasteland moved to the Namib. This route follows the film's chase from the Citadel through the Skeleton Coast dunes, the Swakop River canyon and the Walvis Bay salt pans to the Green Place. The pins are approximate: the sources name areas, not exact spots.
