What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The class falls asleep on a school bus, gassed, and wakes on a remote island: the start of the game. The film's island scenes were shot on Hachijō-kojima, a small island about 287 kilometres south of Tokyo. It has been uninhabited since 1969, which suits a story that needs an empty battlefield. Filming took place in the summer of 2000.

Location precision: The film's island is fictional; the pin marks Hachijō-kojima, where the uninhabited-island scenes were shot.

  2. Once the students are awake, their teacher Kitano explains that they were chosen to take part in the annual Battle Royale. The school building on the island was filmed in Oni-ishi, Gunma, which also staged the ruin where Mitsuko kills Megumi and Shimizu. The school location is listed among Oni-ishi's local sights.

Location precision: The article names the town of Oni-ishi, not the exact building; the pin marks the town.

  3. Wounded Shuya wakes in the island's lighthouse, bandaged by Yukie Utsumi. The lighthouse in the film is Tsurugisaki Lighthouse, a large white tower at the tip of Tsurugizaki in Miura, Kanagawa. It was first lit in March 1871 as Japan's seventh Western-style lighthouse. The interior scenes were not shot here but in the studio.

  4. Mimura uses a homemade bomb to blow up the base, injuring and blinding Kiriyama. The base, the clinic and the lighthouse interiors were built at Toei Tokyo Studio, the film's main shooting location, commonly known as Toei Oizumi. It is a working film studio, so the pin marks the place where these scenes were made, not a visitor attraction.

Location precision: The story's base is fictional; the pin marks the studio where its interiors were filmed.

  5. Shuya and Noriko are last seen on the run toward Shibuya Station. In the novel the ending is in Umeda, Osaka, but the film moves it to Shibuya, Tokyo. The shots were softened where place names would be clearly readable, such as the Center-gai sign. The street runs about 350 metres from the QFRONT building at the Scramble Crossing.

Location precision: The film shows Shibuya without naming spots; the pin marks Center-gai, which the film blurred.

Veteran Saichi Sugimoto and the Ainu girl Asirpa chase convicts tattooed with a map to hidden gold. The manga names towns and landmarks, not exact spots, so most pins are approximate.

Hanasaku Iroha: Yuwaku Onsen

Hanasaku Iroha is set in the fictional spa town of Yunosagi, modelled on Yuwaku Onsen in Kanazawa, with a station borrowed from Nishigishi. Follow Ohana from her grandmother's inn to the lantern festival. The five stops cover the spa town, the demolished hotel that inspired Kissuisō, the rival inn, the station and the real Bonbori Festival. Several models have since closed or changed, so this is as much a fan trail as a set of sites.
