Captain Corelli's Mandolin: Filming Kefalonia
Captain Corelli's Mandolin is set on the Greek island of Cephalonia (Kefalonia) in the Second World War, and the 2001 film shot it around Sami, Antisamos Beach and Myrtos Beach.
The route follows the film's scenes from the opening feast at a ruined monastery to the seafront built as Argostoli, the Italian camp, the mine on the beach, a partisan hideout and the mountain ambush. Much of the film was made on sets that were dismantled afterwards, so some stops are approximate.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
- Fictional
- The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
The film opens and closes with the Feast of St Gerasimos, the island's patron saint, whose body is carried in procession over the sick lying along the route each 16 August. For the cameras, those scenes were shot not at the saint's own monastery in the island's heart but at the ruined monastery of Agios Fanentes on a promontory above Sami. The 11th-century complex kept working until the 1953 earthquake and still shows medieval architecture and Byzantine frescoes.
Location precision: The source places the ruins above Sami; the pin marks Sami's hillside area, not the monastery itself.
Visitor guidance: A path leads there through the ancient acropolis just east of Sami.

The story is set in Argostoli, but the 1953 earthquake destroyed most of that town, so the film recreated it on the east coast at the port of Sami. The Venetian-style colonnade, bell-tower, square and town hall were all built for the production, covering more modern buildings. In the plot, the Italian garrison arrives and the inhabitants surrender immediately. The sets were dismantled straight after filming.

When Captain Corelli and the Italian army arrive, the soldiers pitch their tents at Antisamos Beach, a couple of miles east of Sami on the other side of the peninsula. Along with Argostoli and Sami, it is one of the places where the film was mainly shot.

Myrtos is a mile-and-a-half arc of dazzling white pebbles under sheer cliffs. In the film it is where a WWI mine washes up and is detonated as the islanders watch, and where German Captain Weber tries to make friends with the Italians as they cavort with local women. It has been voted the best Greek beach 12 times.
Visitor guidance: Myrtos is in the Pylaros area on the island's north-west coast.

A ruined village served as the partisans' hideout, where Corelli is taken to meet Mandras, played by Christian Bale. It is also where the film stages its shocking machine-gun massacre. The village is Old Vlachata, just outside Karavomilos and, like the original Argostoli, a casualty of the 1953 earthquake.

The south of the island is dominated by Mount Ainos, its tallest peak at 1,628 metres. On its northern slopes the Italians are ambushed by the German army and ordered to surrender their weapons. In the film, after Italy surrenders, the Germans insist on disarming the Italians, and thousands are later shot as traitors.
