What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The film is set almost entirely inside one statistical institution, and its front door is the former Khomyakov apartment building at Petrovka 3/6, put up in 1900. This is the door the film shows from outside before the action moves indoors. Today the building houses the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport and the Bolshoi restaurant, so you can walk up to the same facade.

Visitor guidance: A public street in central Moscow; the Bolshoi restaurant on the ground floor is open to visitors.

  2. Behind the Petrovka door there is no office at all. Every interior, including director Kalugina's and deputy Samokhvalov's rooms and the big work hall, was built in pavilions at Mosfilm, the Soviet studio founded in 1924. Ryazanov shot in long takes with three cameras at once, which was new for Soviet cinema, between September 1976 and January 1977.

  3. The rooftop with plants is not on Petrovka either. It is the roof of the Nirnzee House at Bolshoy Gnezdnikovsky Lane 10, built in 1912-1913 for architect Ernst-Richard Nirnzee. The building has a long film history, and Office Romance is one of several films that shot scenes on its roof.

  4. Director Lyudmila Kalugina lives in an elite building at Bolshaya Nikitskaya 43, its facade facing Skatertny Lane. On a Sunday evening Novoseltsev visits her here, and the stiff, lonely boss is cautious but changes her look. The film places each hero by address: Kalugina in an elite house, ordinary staff in the sleeping districts.

  5. Deputy director Yury Samokhvalov, who has just returned from abroad, lives on Gorky Street (now Tverskaya) in a building next to the Central Telegraph. The film does not name the exact house, which the pin marks only by the telegraph building. His address makes a point about status: he lives in the heart of Moscow, while ordinary staff live in the sleeping districts.

Location precision: The film only says his building stands next to the Central Telegraph; the pin marks Tverskaya Street 7.

  6. Olga Ryzhova tells Samokhvalov she lives in her own flat outside the city, close to a station. In the film that suburban stop is Losinoostrovskaya, which in reality lies inside Moscow's city limits. The pin marks the station in north-east Moscow.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day — Los Angeles Filming Sites

Terminator 2: Judgment Day was shot across Los Angeles and beyond in 1990 and 1991: the Sixth Street Bridge, the Santa Monica Place mall, the Bull Creek spillway and the Kaiser Steel mill in Fontana all appear in the film. This route follows nine of those real places in story order, from the biker bar where the T-800 picks up its clothes to the steel mill where it dies. Some have vanished — the Sixth Street Viaduct was demolished and the Corral Bar is now a library — and one is in Fremont, not Los Angeles at all.

Jaws: Amity Island on Martha's Vineyard

Jaws was filmed on Martha's Vineyard, which stood in for Amity Island: Edgartown, State Beach and the Jaws Bridge. Steven Spielberg began shooting there on 2 May 1974, using the island's whaling town, its barrier beaches and the little Chappaquiddick ferry as the summer resort the shark terrorises. This route follows the film from the opening bonfire at South Beach to the last shot off Cape Poge Light. In between are Brody's beach-closing signs at Water and Main, the Kintner attack at Joseph Sylvia State Beach, the shark's run under the American Legion Memorial Bridge into Sengekontacket Pond, Quint's vanished workshop at Menemsha and the open water between Oak Bluffs and East Chop where the Orca hunts.

Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Winnetka to New York

Home Alone's Kevin McCallister lives at a real three-storey house at 671 Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, Illinois; his family's Christmas dash was filmed at Chicago's O'Hare, and Home Alone 2 sends him to the Plaza Hotel, Central Park and the Rockefeller Center tree. The route follows both films in order, from the Winnetka house and the two churches where Kevin meets Old Man Marley to the Chicago buildings that stood in for Duncan's Toy Chest and the New York landmarks of the sequel. Every stop is a documented filming location; the house is a private home, so visitors should not disturb the residents.
