Rosenheim Cops: Filming Locations in Rosenheim and Chiemgau
Die Rosenheim-Cops is set in Rosenheim and the Chiemgau, but the town hall, Max-Josefs-Platz, the Chiemsee, Weyarn and Dietramszell are only part of where it was shot.
This route follows seven places where the crime series was set or filmed, from the police headquarters in Rosenheim's town hall to villas near Lake Starnberg. Several stops are marked by area, because the sources name the place but not the exact spot.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
In Die Rosenheim-Cops the police headquarters, where chief inspectors take over each murder case, is in reality Rosenheim's town hall. The building has a railway past: it was the old station's reception building, and when the station moved in 1878 it became the town hall, with a three-storey central pavilion under a tent roof that still hints at its first job. The loco shed opposite is now an exhibition centre. It is the best first stop for the series, right in the town centre.
Visitor guidance: In the town centre, a short walk from the pedestrian zone; an exterior view is enough.

The old market square is the series' favourite street scene, and Rosenheim's guides know it. On screen cars drive across it, which puzzles visitors, because since 1984 it has been a pedestrian zone. The Inn-Salzach-style town houses with arcades and oriels form the backdrop whenever the cops question witnesses in town. Stand in the middle and you see the postcard the show uses, minus the traffic.
Visitor guidance: Pedestrian zone in the old town; free to walk.

The Chiemgau supplies most of the series' landscape shots, and the Chiemsee, Bavaria's largest lake, is often a setting for the investigations. The episodes use it for the Upper Bavarian landscape, usually under a bright blue-and-white sky. The lake's name is old: it was first recorded in 790 and comes from the settlement of Chieming. The pin marks the lake, not one set.
Location precision: The sources say the Chiemsee is often a setting but name no single scene, so the pin marks the lake.
Visitor guidance: The lakeshore is public; reach it by train and road.

The chief inspector's home is the Hofer farm, where the day often starts with breakfast with Marie Hofer until a call about a body breaks it up. Since season two the setting has been a protected former farm in the municipality of Weyarn; from episode 43, broadcast on 7 June 2005, it appears as the Hofer farm. It is a private property, so the pin marks the village.
Location precision: The sources name Weyarn but not the farm's address, and it is private, so the pin marks the municipality.

The cops' local inn, the Rosenbräu, is not in Rosenheim at all: its facade is played by the Landgasthaus Liegl in Dietramszell. The show's other pub, the Times Square, once used part of the Alte Brauerei in Stegen on the Ammersee and is now a studio replica. The pin marks Dietramszell, as the exact address is not in the sources.
Location precision: The source names the inn and the village but gives no address, so the pin marks Dietramszell.
Visitor guidance: A working inn; check opening hours before going.

Many interiors are shot in villas around Munich, and the Villa Waldberta in Feldafing played different roles in many episodes. It was built in 1901/02 for the banker and writer Bernhard Wilhelm Schuler in a villa colony above Lake Starnberg, and later became an artists' house. On screen it can be anything from a victim's home to a suspect's mansion.

Gut Sonnenhausen near Glonn is the other house the production used again and again, in many episodes and in varying roles, alongside the Villa Waldberta. It belongs to the part of the series filmed outside Rosenheim: interiors recorded in the Bavaria film studios and in villas around Munich, the Tegernsee area and Lake Starnberg. Since season 18, more shots return to Rosenheim itself.
