Tokyo Drift: Shibuya, Tokyo and Where It Was Really Filmed
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is set in Tokyo, but most of it was shot in Los Angeles; Shibuya Crossing is the best-known real Tokyo spot.
This route follows Sean Boswell from his Arizona school to the car meets, garages and mountain pass of the film, and shows the Los Angeles locations that stood in for Tokyo, from Hawthorne Plaza to San Gabriel Dam. Several scenes are pinned to the stand-in, not the story setting.
Contains major story spoilers.
The film opens in Oro Valley, Arizona, where high school troublemaker Sean Boswell races classmate Clay and wrecks his Monte Carlo. Sean is sent to live with his father, a U.S. Navy lieutenant stationed in Tokyo, to avoid jail. None of it was shot in Arizona: the school scene was filmed at Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo High School, 2001 Santa Fe Avenue, in Long Beach, California.

Sean's new home is Tokyo, and Shibuya Crossing is its calling card on screen. Director Justin Lin wanted to shoot in Shibuya, "the most crowded place in Tokyo", but permits were impossible to get, so the crew went ahead without permission. The crossing is described as the world's busiest, with 1,000–2,000 people crossing during a single green light.

Sean's first night out ends at an underground car meet, where he clashes with Takashi, the "Drift King", over his girlfriend Neela. He races Takashi's Nissan 350Z in Han's Silvia and loses badly. The vast garage with the spiral ramp is really Hawthorne Plaza Mall in Hawthorne, south of Los Angeles; the mall closed in 1999 and became a popular film set. Demolition began in August 2026.

To repay the wrecked Silvia, Sean agrees to work for Han. The garage where he fixes cars was a warehouse on Santa Fe Avenue at Mesquit Street in Downtown Los Angeles, beneath the old Sixth Street Viaduct. That bridge, opened in 1932, was demolished in 2016, so the spot has changed completely.

Han begins teaching Sean to drift, and Sean practises on a dockside while local fishers look on. The scene was shot on South Seaside Avenue on Terminal Island, San Pedro, by the Terminal Island Japanese Fishing Village Memorial. The island fits the memorial: a Japanese American fishing community was established here starting in 1906.

Han shows Sean the real reason he drifts, which is to meet girls, by performing donuts around two women. The neon-dressed 'Tokyo' intersection is Wilshire Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Flower Street in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. It is pretty much the same spot where, near the end of the movie, Han's Mazda RX-7 is T-boned by a Mercedes-Benz W140 and explodes.

Sean challenges Takashi to a drift, loser leaves Tokyo. They race down a mountain pass; Takashi rams Sean, misses and crashes off a cliff, and Sean becomes the new Drift King. The 'Japanese' pass was filmed in Southern California, on roads off San Gabriel Canyon Road, Route 39, with the San Gabriel Dam visible behind the start. The dam is a rock-fill dam on the San Gabriel River.
