What do the location labels mean?
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. The Suez map sets British and Ottoman troops against each other on the canal's riverbanks, in long desert dunes and across city outskirts, and rolls in an armored train as its behemoth. The real fight came first. Between 26 January and 4 February 1915 a German-led Ottoman force advanced from southern Palestine to seize the canal, which would have cut British links with East Africa, India and Asia. The canal had a railway along its whole 100-mile length, and an armoured train with New Zealand infantry reinforced the Gurkhas' post on the east bank. The attack failed, with nearly 2,000 troops lost.

Location precision: The map is the game's own stretch of canal country; the pin marks the Suez Canal, not a level.

  2. In the War Story The Runner, Australian messenger Frederick Bishop storms the beaches of Gallipoli at Cape Helles and captures a position, then fires a flare, only to find that Foster, who lied about his age to enlist, has come up alone. Bishop is later mortally wounded taking a fort, and closing subtitles say the Ottomans eventually won. The Cape Helles map gives the Ottoman side the Sedd el Bahr fortress and coastal guns. The real landing on 25 April 1915 turned V and W beaches into bloodbaths despite meagre defences.

Location precision: The War Story and the map are the game's own versions of the landing; the pin marks the Cape Helles headland.

Visitor guidance: The Helles Memorial, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, commemorates over 20,000 names from the Gallipoli campaign.

  3. Achi Baba is the second Gallipoli map of the Turning Tides expansion, released with Cape Helles on 11 December 2017: a fast, infantry-focused British assault. Together the two maps form the Gallipoli Operation. The hill is the point of it. On the first day of the landing the 29th Division was to advance six miles and seize its heights, because Achi Baba was the main Ottoman defensive position. Four separate attempts between April and July failed, and the heights stayed in Turkish hands for the whole campaign.

Location precision: The map is named for the hill but is the game's own battlefield; the pin marks the real height.

  4. Sinai Desert is set in the Sinai and Palestine campaign of 1915 to 1918, British Empire against Ottoman Empire. You ride full speed on horseback across huge desert areas and hunt for enemies in narrow streets, while much of the fighting follows railroad tracks where an armored train can swing the battle; a high stone arch is a sniper's favourite. The real railway mattered as much: British engineers built a railway and pipeline across the peninsula, and Romani, the last Central Powers ground attack on the canal, was fought on 3–5 August 1916, 37 km east of it.

Location precision: The map's desert, outposts and arch are the game's own; the pin marks Romani, which the British railway and pipeline were being built towards in 1916.

  5. In the War Story Nothing is Written, set in spring 1918, Bedouin rebel Zara Ghufran fights beside T. E. Lawrence. She infiltrates a derailed Ottoman train in Al-Ajdar and takes a manual of Ottoman codes, then the rebels destroy the Canavar, an Ottoman armored train. Al-Ajdar is the game's invention; the war behind it is real. The Hejaz railway ran from Damascus to Medina, and Ottoman trains were ambushed by Lawrence's guerrilla force. In July 1917 Al-Akhdhar station was attacked and 20 Turkish soldiers captured.

Location precision: Al-Ajdar exists only in the game; the pin marks Al-Ukhaydir (al-Akhdar), a Hejaz railway station with a Hajj fort.

  6. Amiens pits British against Germans in the French city, fought among collapsing alleys, a courthouse, bridges and railways, with an armored train as its behemoth. The game puts it in the middle of the German spring offensive. The real stakes were rails: Amiens was a vital railway junction, and the German push was halted at Villers-Bretonneux on 4 April. The better-known Battle of Amiens began in dense fog on 8 August with almost 600 tanks; Ludendorff called its first day the "black day of the German Army".

Location precision: The map's streets, courthouse and bridges are the game's own; the pin marks Amiens station, the railway junction the fighting was about.

  7. In Avanti Savoia, Luca Vincenzo Cocchiola of the Arditi and his twin brother Matteo join an offensive on an Austro-Hungarian fortress, days after their 21st birthday. Austro-Hungarian bombers trigger a landslide, and after clearing the fortress Luca finds his brother dead. The multiplayer map, with underground trenches and a tunnel bored into the mountainside, is based on the final Italian offensive of 1918. In fact the third battle began on 24 October, when 9 Italian divisions attacked; the Austrians raised their forces from 9 to 15 divisions, then began a general retreat on 28 October.

Location precision: The fortress and tunnel are the game's own layout; the pin marks the summit of Monte Grappa.

Visitor guidance: A military memorial and ossuary stand on the summit, and a World War museum lies on the mountain.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II — Kuttenberg and the Bohemian Paradise

Bohemia, 1403. Henry of Skalitz and Sir Hans Capon ride to Trosky Castle to find out which side Otto von Bergow is on, and the civil war between King Wenceslaus IV and King Sigismund drags them from the rocks of the Bohemian Paradise to the silver city of Kuttenberg, today Kutná Hora. The 2025 sequel by Warhorse Studios recreates its two big maps from real castles, villages and streets. The route follows the story from Trosky to the siege of Suchdol. The game's version of each place is a 1403 reconstruction, so look for the castle ruins and rebuilt keeps rather than the exact buildings Henry sees. The first game's story ends just before it, so this route picks up at Trosky.

Forza Horizon 5: Mexico in Seven Stops

Forza Horizon 5 drops the Horizon Festival into a fictionalised Mexico, on a map 50% larger than Forza Horizon 4's. Creative director Mike Brown calls Mexico almost the whole world in one country: snowy peaks, tropical jungles, epic canyons, beautiful beaches, ancient architecture and modern cities. This route visits seven real places the game recreates, from a sea arch at the tip of Baja to a canyon with a train, and says what the game does at each. The map is a condensed Mexico, so the pins mark the real sites, not their positions in the game.

Shenmue I & II: From Yokosuka to Guilin

In 1986 the teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki comes home to the family dojo in Yokosuka and watches his father, Iwao, die at the hands of Lan Di. Swearing revenge, Ryo follows the killer to Hong Kong in 1987 and on to the mountains of Guilin, and the two games turn that trail into one long walk through a living town, a harbor, a crowded Hong Kong district and a walled city. The route follows Shenmue and Shenmue II in seven stops. Dobuita Street and Kowloon Walled City are real places the game draws on, the dojo and Bailu Village are invented, and every stop says how closely its pin matches the game.
