Call Me by Your Name: From the Perlmans' Villa to the Serio Falls
In the summer of 1983 a seventeen-year-old boy and a twenty-four-year-old American share a house in rural Lombardy: Elio Perlman, who reads too much and plays the piano too well, and Oliver, the graduate student his father hired for the summer. One long, hot, awkward season, and neither of them handles it gracefully. It ends with a telephone call and a boy by a fireplace; it was shot, almost scene by scene, in real places you can still stand in.
This route follows the filming from the Perlmans' villa at Moscazzano through Crema's piazza, a Roman villa on Lake Garda and a war memorial at Pandino, out to the meadow at Capralba where Elio makes his move, and then north for the last three days in Bergamo — the country's tallest waterfall, a pensione in the upper town, a drunken night outside Santa Maria Maggiore, and the small station south of Crema that stands in for Clusone. Principal photography ran from 9 May to the end of June 2016, and the villa is a private home, so a few stops are best seen from the street.

Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
This is the Perlmans' house, the film's main location set: an uninhabited centuries-old mansion in Moscazzano, a village about five miles south of Crema. Guadagnino wanted to buy the house, could not afford it, and filmed there instead; the crew spent weeks turning empty rooms into a home, planting an orchard and building a pergola in the garden. Scenes in the village were shot between 17 and 19 May 2016. The villa is a private home behind high walls — from the road on Via Montodine there is the entrance and not much else.

Elio dutifully takes Oliver into the nearest town to open a bank account for his stay, and the scene is set in the Piazza del Duomo in front of Crema Cathedral, where Oliver asks what it is people do around here. The arch of Torrazzo, the cathedral's bell tower, was one of the locations the production chose, and filming in Crema began on 1 June 2016. The tower dates from around the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and still keeps the clock mechanism made by Domenico Crespi in 1751.
Visitor guidance: An open public square in Crema, with the cathedral and its Torrazzo bell tower on one side of it.

Samuel Perlman takes the two of them to a dig on Lake Garda, where artefacts are being recovered from the water. The scene was filmed at the Grottoes of Catullus, at the northern end of the Sirmione peninsula: brick columns and stone ruins of a Roman villa built between the end of the first century BC and the beginning of the first century AD. The poet's name was attached to the villa in 1483 and there is no hard evidence for it. It was the twenty-seventh most visited site in Italy in 2013, with 215,961 visitors.
Visitor guidance: The ruins and their museum are on the water at Sirmione, at the far south end of Lake Garda.

This is where Elio finally says it. He recites his Knight's Tale — a knight unable to declare his love for a Princess, left with a stark choice — and then tells Oliver his feelings, and Oliver shuts the conversation down. The scene was filmed at the war memorial in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, in Pandino a few miles north-west of Crema, in a single long take; Pandino's scenes were shot between 17 and 19 May 2016. The film also used the Castello Visconteo nearby, a hunting residence built by Bernabò Visconti around 1355.
Visitor guidance: The memorial stands in the main square of Pandino, a few miles north-west of Crema.

Oliver has just refused to discuss what Elio told him, so Elio takes him to the place where he goes to read, where the water running down from the mountains is freezing. This is Fontanile Quarantina, a quiet nature reserve near Capralba, north-east of Pandino. In this secluded spot the two kiss for the first time, and the cautious Oliver pulls back again.
Location precision: The guide names the reserve but not the spot in the meadow; the pin marks the Fontanile Quarantina at Capralba.
Visitor guidance: A spring-fed nature reserve on the plain east of Pandino, on the road towards Capralba.

The last trip goes north of Bergamo, to the tallest waterfall in Italy. The Serio Falls drop 315 metres in three steps of 166, 74 and 75 metres near Valbondione, high in the Valle Seriana, and the crew was granted permission to film there for only half an hour — so the torrent on screen was captured in one short window. A dam above the falls regulates the flow, releasing water for less than an hour, only four or five times a year. Plan ahead, or you may find no water at all.
Visitor guidance: The falls are above Valbondione in the Bergamo Alps, 50 km from Bergamo; the water is released only a few times a year, so check before setting out.

Before Oliver flies home, the film gives the pair three days together in Bergamo. The pensione they stay in was the Hotel Agnello d'Oro, number 22 on Via Gombito, at the corner by the Fontana del Gombito just north-east of the cathedral. It has since closed. The Bergamo scenes were shot on the exteriors of the old city's historic buildings.
Location precision: The guide gives the pensione's street address, not its door or rooms; the pin marks number 22 on Via Gombito.
Visitor guidance: A public street in Bergamo's upper town, a short walk up from Piazza Duomo; the pin is the address, not a museum.

The last night out ends in the square in front of Santa Maria Maggiore, one deliriously drunken evening in Piazza Padre Reginaldo Giuliani. Behind them stands a basilica founded in 1137 to keep a vow made to the Virgin Mary in 1133, during the plague, its bell tower raised from 1436.
Visitor guidance: The basilica stands on Piazza Duomo in Bergamo's upper town, open to visitors outside services.

Oliver's train is supposed to leave from Clusone; it was really shot at Pizzighettone, a small station south of Crema, and the platform carries the wrong name on purpose. The film shows Clusone, a real station on the Val Seriana line until 1967, and mountains were added in post-production to sell the illusion. It stands on the Pavia–Cremona line, in the commune of Maleo, served by regional trains. Afterwards Elio telephones his mother to come and get him.
Visitor guidance: Regional trains stop here on the Codogno–Cremona run; the station is named after the nearby town of Pizzighettone but lies just over the boundary, in Maleo.
