Ghost Recon Wildlands: The Real Bolivia

Ubisoft sent a team of developers across Bolivia in 2012 and built a cartel-ridden version of the country from what they saw. The game's story is fiction, and Bolivia's government complained about it in 2017.

What do the location labels mean?
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The story begins in July 2019, when a bomb hits the American embassy in La Paz. The United States answers by sending in a Ghost Recon fireteam. The real city sits in a canyon cut by the Choqueyapu River, ringed by the mountains of the Altiplano. In 2017 Bolivia's government filed a formal complaint about the game's portrayal of the country with the French embassy in La Paz.

Location precision: The game does not tie the bombing to a mapped address; the pin marks La Paz itself.

  2. Wildlands recreates the Yungas Road, the 64-kilometre route linking La Paz with the Yungas region and better known as Death Road. It is so narrow in places that sections are under 3 metres wide. A newer route now carries the traffic, so the old North Yungas Road is used mainly by cyclists, motorcyclists and walkers.

Location precision: The game map is fictionalised; the pin marks the real road's general area, not a specific in-game spot.

Visitor guidance: The old North Yungas Road is open to cyclists, motorcyclists and walkers; go with a guide and watch the narrow edges.

  3. The developers' map recreates the train cemetery near Uyuni. In reality it lies 3 km outside the town, joined to it by old tracks. Uyuni was once a hub for trains carrying minerals to Pacific ports; the lines were built between 1888 and 1892. The abandoned locomotives now draw tourists, and they gave the game a striking piece of real Bolivia to borrow.

Location precision: The game's version is fictionalised; the pin marks the real cemetery outside Uyuni.

Visitor guidance: A short ride or walk from Uyuni along the old tracks.

  4. Laguna Colorada, the Red Lagoon, is a shallow, hypersaline lake in the remote south-west of the Altiplano, inside the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. It lies at about 4,278 metres above sea level and has been a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 1990. Ubisoft's fictionalised map recreates it among the landmarks the team photographed on their trip.

Location precision: The in-game lake is a fictionalised version; the pin marks the real lagoon.

Visitor guidance: Inside the Eduardo Avaroa reserve; it is high and remote, so go with a tour operator.

  5. Wildlands recreates the silver mines of Potosí. Cerro Rico above the city is the world's largest silver deposit and has been mined since the sixteenth century; Potosí hosted the first mint in the Americas. In 2012 more than 30 Ubisoft developers spent two weeks travelling across Bolivia, consulting locals, and came home with about 15,000 photographs.

Location precision: The game's mines are fictionalised; the pin marks Cerro Rico, not a specific in-game mine.

Days Gone: Oregon After the Collapse

Two years after a pandemic turns millions of people into feral Freakers, outlaw biker Deacon St. John rides central Oregon as a drifter and bounty hunter. He believes his wife Sarah died when a NERO helicopter lifted her out of the outbreak — until he learns she was moved to a military outpost at Crater Lake. Days Gone's Oregon is a compressed, renamed version of the real high desert: Bend becomes Farewell, Black Butte Ranch becomes Iron Butte Ranch, and the militia holds Crater Lake. The route follows Deacon's ride from the opening evacuation to the volcanic lake where the story ends, through the hot springs, small towns and logging country that Bend Studio used as its model.

1979 Revolution: Tehran, Black Friday

In September 1978, an 18-year-old photographer named Reza Shirazi comes home to Tehran and is pulled into the last days before Black Friday. The developers built the game from interviews with forty Iranians who lived through the revolution and from photographs by Michel Setboun; the streets, the cinema hideout and the prison are real places, filled with a fictional cast. This route follows the game's 1978 story in order, from a Hasanabad rooftop to the shooting at Jaleh Square, then ends in the Evin Prison interrogation that frames the whole game. It is a route through the city the game recreates, not a walking itinerary.

Age of Empires II: Joan of Arc, Vaucouleurs to Rouen

Age of Empires II follows Joan of Arc from a French army camp at Vaucouleurs to the stake at Rouen. The designers said they deferred to history wherever it did not interfere with gameplay, and the campaign's spine — Orléans, Patay, Reims, Paris — is close to the record. But the game also bends the story, placing Joan at a battle she missed and turning a failed assault on Paris into a betrayal. This route follows the campaign's stops in order and sets each one beside what the sources say happened there.
