GTA Vice City: The Real Miami Behind Vice City

Vice City is Miami with the labels peeled off. The 2002 game, set in 1986, follows gangster Tommy Vercetti's rise to power after prison, from an ambushed drug deal to the takeover of a drug lord's mansion. The developers built the world from extensive field research in Miami, and the plot draws on the city's real Cubans, Haitians and biker gangs.

What do the location labels mean?
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. Tommy Vercetti comes to Vice City in 1986 to set up a drug deal with crooked lawyer Ken Rosenberg, and the exchange in the city's port is ambushed: Tommy and Ken barely escape, and Sonny Forelli's drugs and money are gone. Recovering them drives the whole story. The real counterpart is the Port of Miami, formally the Dante B. Fascell Port of Miami and the largest passenger port in the world, joined to Downtown by Port Boulevard.

  2. Vice Beach, the eastern half of the game map, is where the game starts, and its Ocean Beach promenade of Art Deco buildings alludes directly to the famous Art Deco promenade of South Beach. At first the bridges west stay closed because of a storm warning, so the player learns the city here. The developers built the world from extensive field research in Miami. The real model is Ocean Drive, a major thoroughfare in the South Beach neighbourhood, known for its Art Deco hotels, restaurants and bars.

On the game's western island the Cuban gang holds Little Havana, and Tommy takes missions for both sides of the war between the Cubans and the Haitians, a power struggle that keeps ending in bloodbaths. The game's plot draws on real Miami Cubans, Haitians and biker gangs. The real Little Havana is a Miami neighbourhood home to many Cuban exiles and immigrants from Central and South America, and its landmarks include Calle Ocho and Domino Park, an integral part of the district.

  4. Further south on the game's mainland lies Little Haiti, territory of the Haitian gang, whose power struggle with the Cubans keeps ending in bloodbaths while Tommy works for both sides. The real Little Haiti is a Miami neighbourhood home to Haitian immigrants and other Caribbean residents. Its landmark is a 13-foot bronze statue of General Toussaint L'Ouverture, father of the Haitian Revolution, on N Miami Avenue at 62nd Street.

  5. The bikers hold Downtown, in the north of the game's western island, and Tommy's deals there run alongside errands for men like the Texan business tycoon Avery Carrington. The real counterpart is Greater Downtown Miami, the city's urban core, where Brickell Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard are the main north–south roads.

  6. Diaz's gang holds its ground around the don's villa on Starfish Island until Tommy and Lance storm the mansion, kill Diaz and take his empire; the same villa, now the seat of the Vercetti gang, hosts the final shootout. Starfish Island is the villa district of the rich and beautiful, alluding to Fisher Island. The real Fisher Island is a private residential and resort community known for wealth and restricted access, with no road or causeway to the mainland, reached only by yacht or private ferry.

The Last of Us Part II: Three Days in Seattle

Tommy sets out for Seattle to hunt Abby, and Ellie and Dina follow him into a ruined city where the WLF militia and a cult, the Seraphites, fight for control. The Last of Us Part II plays the same three days twice: first as Ellie, then as Abby. The city is the real one: Naughty Dog chose Seattle for its hills and varied weather, and its artists travelled there to study the architecture, vegetation and topography. This route follows both runs. Ellie's: the synagogue they call the Dome, the Pinnacle Theatre, the convention centre and its stalkers, the hospital and the aquarium. Abby's: the stadium she lives in, the Great Wheel of her memories, the Chinatown Gate and the Space Needle seen from the island. Many of the game's buildings carry new names; each stop names the real one behind it.

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag: Nassau and the Observatory

In 1715 a Welsh pirate kills an Assassin, steals his clothes and his name, and ends up sitting in his place at a meeting of Templars in Havana. That is how Edward Kenway enters the Golden Age of Piracy: he takes a ship, the Jackdaw, builds a pirate brotherhood in Nassau, loses his friends to the gallows and to each other, and spends the rest of the story chasing a device called the Observatory that can watch anyone on earth. Black Flag sets all of it in real ports — Havana, Nassau, Kingston, Port Royal — and then leaves the Caribbean for the Maya ruins of Tulum, an island in the Gulf of Guinea and a final scene in London. The route follows Edward from the harbour where Torres's plot starts, through the pirate republic and the governor who ends it, to the Kingston house where Mary Read drops the disguise, the jail at Port Royal, Príncipe, where the Sage is waiting, and Covent Garden. Most stops mark a real landmark in the town the game rebuilds.
