Little House on the Prairie: Pepin to Mansfield

Little House in the Big Woods begins in a log cabin near Pepin, Wisconsin, and the Ingalls family goes on to a Kansas prairie, a dugout beside Plum Creek at Walnut Grove, Minnesota, and the Dakota homestead at De Smet. All five homesites survive as cabins, museums or marked sites.

Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The first book begins in a log house in the Big Woods, where Laura gathers wood chips, helps Ma and Pa preserve meat, and gets a rag doll named Charlotte when her cousins come for Christmas. Wilder drew it from her own childhood on this Pepin County farm, seven miles northwest of Pepin, where she was born in 1867. A replica of the house described in Little House in the Big Woods stands on the spot, unfurnished, with a fireplace, two bedrooms and a loft. It closes once the snow gets deep.

  2. Pa builds the one-room log house in Indian Territory, and the family farms land it has no legal right to occupy. Malaria lays them all low, Osage people are a common sight, and Carrie is born in August 1870. Then word comes that U.S. soldiers will remove the white settlers, and Pa decides to move on. The museum stands on the old claim in Montgomery County, with a replica of the cabin, the Sunnyside schoolhouse and the post office from Wayside moved to the grounds. It opened in 1977.

  3. The Ingalls leave Kansas by covered wagon and settle beside Plum Creek, where Pa trades the horses Pet and Patty for a dugout and stable. Laura and Mary meet Nellie Oleson, the storekeeper's daughter, go to school for the first time, and watch the locust plague destroy the wheat in 1874. A four-day blizzard delays Pa's homecoming. The dugout stood about 1.5 miles north of Walnut Grove; the town's Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum tells the story, though the television series was filmed in California.

  4. By the Shores of Silver Lake opens as the family leaves Plum Creek for Dakota Territory, where the surveyors ask them to keep watch over their equipment and stay in their house for the winter. Pa files a homestead claim south of De Smet in the spring of 1880; the next winter, the Hard Winter, becomes The Long Winter. Laura teaches school to help send blind Mary to college, and Almanzo Wilder, a bachelor homesteader, courts her. The 160-acre homestead southeast of town is open to visitors.

  5. The last stop is not a book setting but the place the books were made. Laura and Almanzo bought 40 acres here in 1894, and she lived at Rocky Ridge until her death in 1957. At 65 she wrote the first four Little House books in the Rock House, the cottage her daughter Rose built in 1928. The farmhouse and Rock House are open for tours, and Mansfield still holds a yearly festival that turns the clock back to the late 19th century.

Carlos Castaneda: From Cajamarca to Don Juan's Mexico

From 1968 Carlos Castaneda published best-sellers about his apprenticeship to don Juan Matus, a Yaqui sorcerer from Sonora: peyote, power, and finally a leap into an abyss. They came out as anthropology and earned him UCLA degrees. Most scholars now read them as fiction, and the author reinvented his own life story too. This route follows two maps at once. One holds the places the records confirm: Cajamarca, Lima, UCLA and Westwood. The other holds the places the books name, from a Greyhound depot in Nogales to a bench in Oaxaca and the Toltec warriors of Tula. Each stop's accuracy label tells you which map it belongs to.

Wolf Hall: From Putney to the Tower

Thomas Cromwell rises from a Putney childhood to become Henry VIII's most trusted minister, then falls in the same Tudor politics he mastered. Hilary Mantel's trilogy follows him from Cardinal Wolsey's household through the Reformation, Anne Boleyn's rise and execution, and his own last years. This route traces the places that anchor the story: Cromwell's birthplace and London house, Wolsey's palaces at York Place and Esher, the abbey where Wolsey died, Westminster Abbey for Anne's coronation, the Seymour seat that gives the novels their title, Hampton Court, and the Tower. The 2015 television adaptation used Dover Castle for the Tower of London and Penshurst Place for Whitehall.

The Lightning Thief: From Long Island to Olympus

Percy Jackson is a twelve-year-old boy in New York City who has just learned that the Greek gods are real — and that Zeus's master bolt is missing. With Annabeth and Grover, he has ten days to cross the country, find the bolt and reach the Underworld beneath Los Angeles before a war breaks out on Olympus. Rick Riordan's 2005 novel turns real American landmarks into monster stops: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a Montauk beach, the Gateway Arch, a Denver water park, a Las Vegas casino that eats time, the Santa Monica Pier and the Empire State Building. A Disney+ series adapted the story from December 2023 to January 2024.
