Priscilla, Queen of the Desert: Sydney to Kings Canyon
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert starts at Sydney's Imperial Hotel in Erskineville, crosses the outback through Broken Hill's Palace Hotel and Coober Pedy, and ends at a casino in Alice Springs and the cliffs of Kings Canyon.
Three performers ride a bus named Priscilla to a four-week booking, and the film was shot at many of the places on the road. This route follows their trip in story order. The exact spot of the breakdown is approximate, and the Coober Pedy and Kings Canyon pins mark the town and the park.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Tick, a Sydney-based drag queen who goes by Mitzi Del Bra, takes an offer to perform in Alice Springs, and the story begins on a Sydney club stage. The Imperial Hotel in Erskineville was the filming location for the opening and closing scenes, so the film ends where it starts, with Tick and Adam performing in the same club. The hotel has hosted drag shows since 1983 and is still an icon for Sydney's LGBT community.
Visitor guidance: The Imperial Hotel is at 35 Erskineville Road, Erskineville.

The first big stop on the road is Broken Hill, where the trio check into a hotel covered in murals. The Palace Hotel stood in for it, and producer Al Clark called it "drag queen heaven". The film's own verdict on the murals is "tack-o-rama". Owner Mario Celotto painted a Botticelli's Venus on a ceiling around 1980. The pub, at 227 Argent Street, is now heritage-listed, and you can book the Priscilla Suite.
Visitor guidance: A working pub at 227 Argent Street, with a Priscilla Suite for overnight guests.

After the travellers leave the main highway to save time, the bus breaks down in the middle of the desert. Adam spends the whole day repainting it in lavender to cover the graffiti. A location guide places the scene at the Mundi Mundi Plain Lookout, beyond Silverton, northwest of Broken Hill. Stranded there, they perform at a corroboree with a group of friendly Aboriginal Australians, who then help them get Priscilla to Bob.

With Bob now travelling with them, the bus stops for repairs at the remote opal-mining town of Coober Pedy. Adam is attacked here by a homophobic gang, and Bob and Bernadette save him. The production filmed in this remote, rough-and-tumble opal mining town, and it features prominently in the film. Called the "opal capital of the world", Coober Pedy is a place where many residents prefer to live in caves bored into the hillsides.

The trio set out for a four-week run at the casino, and Alice Springs is the destination of the whole trip. Arriving at the hotel, Tick finds that he and his wife Marion have an eight-year-old son, Benji. Lasseters in Alice Springs is the resort featured in the film. The complex has a hotel, a casino and the Alice Springs Convention Centre.
Visitor guidance: The resort is on Barrett Drive and includes a hotel, a casino and a convention centre.

Before the final shows, the three travellers fulfill a long-held dream of Adam's: to climb Kings Canyon in full drag regalia. The script first called for Uluṟu, but the organisations responsible for the monument rejected the request, so the scene was filmed at Kings Canyon with the dialogue rewritten slightly. The canyon lies in Watarrka National Park, 323 km southwest of Alice Springs, and is notable for its cycads and permanent rock pools.
Location precision: The pin marks the national park that contains Kings Canyon; the film does not show the exact climbing route.
