Stand by Me: Castle Rock to the Trestle

Stand by Me moves King's Castle Rock from Maine to Oregon: Rob Reiner shot the 1986 film in Brownsville, along the Row River railway and at a California trestle. Four boys walk out of town to find a missing boy's body, and the trip changes them.

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. The flashback opens in Castle Rock, and Castle Rock is Brownsville. King's novella keeps the town in Maine in 1960; the film moves it to Oregon in 1959. Gordie walks into a shop on North Main Street, just south of Stanard Avenue, and buys a copy of True Police Cases, the pulp magazine that feeds his imagination. The Coca-Cola sign painted for the production still shows on the south wall of the old 1903 Bank of Brownsville building. Since 2007 the town has held an annual Stand by Me Day, and a penny is set into the street where Vern finds one.

Visitor guidance: Main Street is a public street; the painted mural is on the old bank building.

  2. The treehouse was the boys' headquarters, a hideout in an oak on the south side of School Avenue, a little north of Main Street. They play cards and smoke there, and it is there that Vern climbs in with what he overheard from his brother and Charlie: Ray Brower, a missing boy from a neighboring town, is dead. The four decide to find the body and become local heroes. The address is a quiet residential street.

Location precision: The treehouse stood in an oak on the south side of School Avenue; it has no street address.

Visitor guidance: School Avenue is a residential street a little north of Main Street.

  3. Gordie lives at 325 Fisher Street, west of Main, in a house where his parents' grief leaves him feeling overlooked. His older brother Denny has just died, and the film's Gordie believes his father does not know him. It is the quiet wound under the whole trip: a boy who feels unseen goes looking for a body with the three friends who do see him. The house is a private home, so there is nothing to visit beyond the street.

  4. Two neighboring buildings on North Main carry the film's setup. The pool hall is the Brownsville Saloon at 419 North Main Street, and outside it Ace takes the Yankees cap that Gordie's dead brother Denny gave him. Next door, behind the Blue Point Diner — the Brownsville Health Mart in 1985 — Chris opens his jacket and shows Gordie a Colt .45 he stole from his father. The gun and the cap are the two props that set the journey going. The two buildings still stand on the same block.

Visitor guidance: The buildings stand on North Main Street; the saloon address is 419.

  5. The four leave Castle Rock along the railroad and cross the girder bridge over Mosby Creek at Walden, south-east of Cottage Grove. In the film this is where the trek to the body begins. The bridge now carries the Row River Trail, a BLM rail-trail on the abandoned Oregon Pacific & Eastern line; the tracks that carried the boys are a 16.2-mile cycle path between Cottage Grove and Culp Creek. It is about 40 miles from Brownsville. The Mosby Creek trailhead sits just north of Mosby Creek Road.

Location precision: The pin marks the Mosby Creek trailhead beside the former rail bridge; the bridge is not separately mapped.

Visitor guidance: The bridge is on the Row River Trail; the Mosby Creek trailhead is just north of Mosby Creek Road in Walden.

  6. Gordie is sent to a general store to buy the food the boys forgot, and the shop is now an abandoned building at 91979 Territorial Road, on the north-east corner of Franklin Road south-west of Junction City. In the film the errand is a small pause in the trek, a reminder that these are kids on a camping trip, not detectives. The storefront is empty and there is no shop to visit. It is about ten miles north-west of Eugene, a detour from the rail trail.

  7. The film's most famous sequence was shot in California. Gordie and Vern are crossing a high trestle when a steam engine bears down on them; telephoto compression made the train look closer than it was. The bridge is 80 feet tall, spans Lake Britton just east of Hwy 89, and belongs to the Great Shasta Rail Trail. Four small adult stunt doubles did the running, with plywood planks laid across the ties. The locomotive was McCloud River Railroad No. 25, later sold to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad. The lake is ringed by PG&E land, national forest and McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park.

  8. The trip ends where it began. The boys come back into Castle Rock the next morning, cross the Calapooia River bridge on Main Street south of town, and part at Park Avenue. The film's flashback closes on that walk home; back in 1985 the adult Gordie is finishing the memoir that frames the story, and we learn that Chris was later stabbed to death trying to break up a fight in a fast-food restaurant. Brownsville still holds its Stand by Me Day each July.

The Boy's Word: Kazan's Asphalt Wars

The Boy's Word: Blood on the Asphalt is set in Kazan but was filmed in Yaroslavl; its story comes from the real Kazan phenomenon of teenage gangs in Sukonnaya Sloboda, Privolzhsky District, Novo-Tatarskaya Sloboda and Sotsgorod. The route follows the real history behind the 2023 series, from street fights in the 1940s to the 1978 motorcycle run, then to Naberezhnye Chelny and Yaroslavl, where the series was cast and shot. The series invents its gang territories, so all pins are approximate.
