Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. The film opens in the old Clatsop County Jail on Duane Street, where Jake Fratelli is sprung by his family after faking a suicide. The chase that follows runs through Astoria and ends on the beach below Haystack Rock. The jail is now the Oregon Film Museum, opened in 2010 for the film's 25th anniversary; its cells hold Goonies props and costumes, and an ORV like the Fratellis' sits outside with imitation bullet holes.

Visitor guidance: The Oregon Film Museum at 732 Duane Street is open to visitors; you can shoot a short scene on its small sets and green screens.

  2. The Walsh house is a private home on the eastern edge of Astoria, at 368 38th Street. This is where Mikey's family faces foreclosure, where the Goonies gather for one last weekend, and where a 1632 doubloon and an old treasure map turn up in the attic. Data lives next door at 304 38th Street, a zipwire away in the film. The house drew 1,200 to 1,500 visitors a day in summer 2015, and the road was closed to tours that year.

  3. Mikey's father works as a curator at the local history museum, played by the Captain George Flavel House Museum at 441 8th Street. The 1885 Queen Anne mansion, built for a river bar pilot, keeps its original Victorian appearance and sits across Duane Street from the old jail. In the film it is the quiet, respectable Astoria the Goonies are trying to save. The house is open as a museum, so you can walk the same halls Mikey's dad did.

  4. Map in hand, the Goonies pedal out of Astoria and up the access road into Ecola State Park, more than 26 miles south in Cannon Beach. The park road and the coastline appear in the film; Brand follows on his bike and is launched off the same road. The park covers 9 miles of coast between Cannon Beach and Seaside. Drivers today take the same park road, where the beach and Haystack Rock open up below.

Visitor guidance: The park road runs north from Cannon Beach to the Ecola Point parking area.

  5. Haystack Rock is the 235-foot sea stack the Goonies use as a guide to the map's starting point. It looms over Cannon Beach, and in the film the Fratellis escape into an ORV rally on the sand below it. The rock is a nesting site for terns and puffins, and at low tide its pools are full of starfish, anemones and crabs. You can walk to its base when the tide is out, but climbing above the barnacle line is not allowed.

Visitor guidance: Cannon Beach is the place to start; walk out at low tide, stay below the barnacle line and give the nesting birds room.

  6. The Goonies follow the map to a derelict seaside restaurant that turns out to be the Fratelli family's hideout. They find a tunnel in the basement and go underground. The Lighthouse Lounge was a set built beside the Ecola Point parking area and taken down when filming wrapped, so the building itself is gone. Stand in the parking area and you are looking at the ground where the boys went in.

Location precision: The Lighthouse Lounge was a set built at Ecola Point and dismantled after filming; the pin marks Ecola Point.

Visitor guidance: Ecola Point is reached from the Ecola State Park parking area; the set is gone, but the parking area is still there.

  7. The underground journey was shot far from Oregon, on Stage 16 at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. There the crew built the cavernous grotto where the Goonies find One-Eyed Willy's pirate ship, the Inferno, a full-sized replica. In the story this is where the Goonies finally reach the ship. The set was scrapped after shooting because nobody wanted it, so the ship and the grotto survive only on screen.

Location precision: The grotto and ship were sets in Stage 16; the pin marks the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank.

  8. The Goonies come out of the tunnel onto what is meant to be Astoria's beach, but the final scene was shot at Goat Rock Beach in Sonoma County, California. The beach and its jagged rocks stand in for Cauldron Point, with the Inferno sailing away in the distance. In the story the families are reunited and the Fratellis are arrested here. The beach is part of Sonoma Coast State Beach and is also a haul-out for harbour seals, so keep your distance.

Visitor guidance: Goat Rock Beach is in Sonoma Coast State Beach; stay at least 50 yards from the seals.

The Dawns Here Are Quiet: Karelia

The 1972 film The Dawns Here Are Quiet is set at a railway siding in wartime Karelia but was shot around Syamozero, in the village of Syargilakhta and at the Ruskeala waterfalls. Based on Boris Vasiliev's 1969 novel, it follows five young women gunners and a sergeant major against sixteen saboteurs. The route runs from the story's invented Siding 171 and Vop Lake to the real shores, village and waterfalls where Stanislav Rostotsky filmed in 1971. Note that the siding and the lake exist only in the story.
