What do the location labels mean?
Speculative
A reasoned guess: sources disagree or the exact place is unknown.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. Kellerman's is where the Houseman family arrives for the summer of 1963: an upscale Catskills resort in the Borscht Belt, owned by Jake's sarcastic best friend Max. The stone main building, the dining room, the beach games and the family's cabin all appear in the film, and so does the kitchen where Penny cries. The real Mountain Lake Lodge, built of local stone in 1938, stood in for the fictional resort; the lake and gazebo below it supply the waterside scenes. The lodge still takes guests from early May to late November.

  2. The resort staff gather at a secret party, and Billy introduces Baby to Johnny, who dances with her. It is the first time she sees the dancing the resort keeps hidden. The cabins were supplied by the abandoned Chimney Rock Camp for Boys, a former Boy Scout camp on Lake Lure. They were demolished after filming, and the land is now Firefly Cove, a private residential community. Only the stone steps down to the old bridge survive.

  3. Baby needs $250 to pay for Penny's abortion, and she asks her father for it on the golf course, without telling him what it is for. The scene was shot on the 16th green of Bald Mountain Golf Course at Rumbling Bald Resort, in the Blue Ridge foothills by Lake Lure. Today it is the 16th hole of an 18-hole course designed by W.B. Lewis, with five par 3s and five par 5s. The resort sits by the lake, and the green is still in play.

  4. Johnny takes Baby into the lake to teach her the lift, the move she must land at the Sheldrake. The water was near 40 °F when the scene was shot in October 1986. The spot is just down the path from the gazebo, though Mountain Lake has a history of draining through fissures in its bed: from 2008 to 2020 it was a reddish-brown pit, and its level still fluctuates. The lake is one of only two natural lakes in Virginia.

Location precision: Kellerman's lake is fictional; the pin marks Mountain Lake, where the water-lift scene was shot.

Visitor guidance: The lake lies below Mountain Lake Lodge; the water level varies, so the lift spot may be dry.

  5. The film ends in Kellerman's ballroom, which was the camp gymnasium dressed for the night. Johnny interrupts the final song, brings Baby on stage, says she made him a better person, and they dance the routine they practised all summer, landing the lift at last; the staff and guests join them. The same gym, with a thrust stage added, also played the Sheldrake, where Baby and Johnny perform Mambo Magic. The gym burned down and only stone foundations remain, inside the private Firefly Cove community.

  6. Kellerman's is fictional, but it has a real ancestor. Grossinger's, a resort in the Borscht Belt town of Liberty, New York, is often cited as the inspiration for the film's setting; it ran from the 1910s until 1986, the year before the film came out. Its dining room seated 1,300 guests, and Rocky Marciano trained there. Most of the buildings were demolished by 2018, the rest burned in 2022, and the site was sold for redevelopment in 2025.

Location precision: Kellerman's is fictional; Grossinger's is often cited as its inspiration, not a confirmed model.

The Dawns Here Are Quiet: Karelia

The 1972 film The Dawns Here Are Quiet is set at a railway siding in wartime Karelia but was shot around Syamozero, in the village of Syargilakhta and at the Ruskeala waterfalls. Based on Boris Vasiliev's 1969 novel, it follows five young women gunners and a sergeant major against sixteen saboteurs. The route runs from the story's invented Siding 171 and Vop Lake to the real shores, village and waterfalls where Stanislav Rostotsky filmed in 1971. Note that the siding and the lake exist only in the story.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day — Los Angeles Filming Sites

Terminator 2: Judgment Day was shot across Los Angeles and beyond in 1990 and 1991: the Sixth Street Bridge, the Santa Monica Place mall, the Bull Creek spillway and the Kaiser Steel mill in Fontana all appear in the film. This route follows nine of those real places in story order, from the biker bar where the T-800 picks up its clothes to the steel mill where it dies. Some have vanished — the Sixth Street Viaduct was demolished and the Corral Bar is now a library — and one is in Fremont, not Los Angeles at all.
