The Sopranos: Tony's New Jersey

Tony Soprano's mob is a New Jersey one, and the series made a point of it: the majority of its exterior scenes were filmed on location in the state, with most interiors built at Silvercup Studios in New York.

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Every episode starts here, more or less. In the opening titles Tony Soprano comes out of the Lincoln Tunnel, passes through the tollbooth for the New Jersey Turnpike and drives past a string of Newark and Jersey City landmarks, the Pulaski Skyway among them. Chase said the sequence was meant to show that this mafia show was about New Jersey, as opposed to New York. The Skyway opened in 1932 and runs about 3.5 miles between Newark and Jersey City.

Visitor guidance: Pedestrians and cyclists cannot use the Skyway; it can only be driven.

  2. The opening titles end with Tony pulling into the driveway of his suburban home. The exteriors were shot at a private residence in North Caldwell, while most indoor shots of the house were made at Silvercup Studios in New York. In the pilot the family's swimming pool gives Tony his most famous story for Dr Melfi: a family of ducks lived in it until the ducklings fledged, and he realises he is sad because he dreads losing his own family. Late in the series, Tony and his family move back into their North Caldwell home.

Location precision: The house is a private residence; the pin marks the borough of North Caldwell, not the property.

  3. The crew's clubhouse began as a real butcher's shop. In the pilot the pork store is Centanni's Meat Market in Elizabeth, where Silvio tells Tony, Paulie and the gang that his wife Gabriella sends him for the best capicola, and where Christopher shoots Emil Kolar in the rear of the store. The shop had steady business of its own, so HBO acquired an abandoned auto parts store in Kearny that became Satriale's for the rest of the series. That building was demolished after the show ended, and the owner sold its bricks as souvenirs.

  4. In "Pax Soprana", the sixth episode, Uncle Junior has Rusty Irish killed after the tailor's 14-year-old grandson dies following drugs Rusty sold him. Mikey Palmice, helped by Joseph Marino, throws Rusty off the Great Falls bridge into the falls. The 77-foot waterfall is on the Passaic River in Paterson. Today it is protected as part of Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, run by the National Park Service.

  5. Silvio Dante's club is where the DiMeo crime family does business, in the back office or at the bar. The name comes from the catchphrase popularized by Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. Its exteriors and interiors were shot at Satin Dolls, a real go-go bar on Route 17 in Lodi that existed before the show; the office scenes were built on a sound stage at Silvercup Studios. The parking lot sees the series' ugliest nights: Ralph Cifaretto beats a dancer, Tracee, to death there, and Silvio is shot there on Phil Leotardo's orders.

  6. Sent to collect from a Russian called Valery, Paulie starts a fight that leaves him apparently dead, and he and Christopher decide to dump the body in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. In the snow-covered woods Valery turns out to be alive, hits them with a shovel and flees. The pair get lost, shelter in an abandoned van and are found by Tony and Bobby, but Paulie's car, with the money, has disappeared. The writers deliberately kept Valery's fate ambiguous.

Location precision: The episode is set in the Pine Barrens, a vast area of southern New Jersey, but was filmed in Harriman State Park in New York; the pin marks the middle of the Pine Barrens.

Visitor guidance: The real Pine Barrens form the Pinelands National Reserve, which includes Wharton, Brendan T. Byrne, Penn and Bass River state forests.

  7. The finale, "Made in America", ends here. The Sopranos meet at Holsten's diner, where Tony tells Carmela that Carlo has flipped and will testify. Tony looks up at every patron who comes in, Meadow arrives late after trouble parking, and Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" plays. Then the door opens, the bell rings, Tony looks up and the screen cuts to black. It was filmed in March 2007 at Holsten's Brookdale Confectionery, an ice cream and candy shop in Bloomfield, after the town council voted to deny a filming permit.

The Witcher: Season One from Hungary to the Canaries

Netflix's Continent was built from a patchwork of real places: a Hungarian fort, a village museum, a former monastery, Canary Islands coasts and a ruined Polish castle. This route follows season one's shoot from October 2018 to May 2019: Cintra and Marnadal in Hungary, Aretuza and Ciri's desert in the Canary Islands, and Sodden Hill at Ogrodzieniec in Poland. Filming spots only; the Continent itself is invented.

Port Royal and Tortuga were built on a quiet St Vincent bay, Cannibal Island is Dominican rainforest, and a private Bahamian cay sits behind a famous duel. Parasite: Bong Joon-ho's Seoul

Bong Joon-ho's celebrated thriller follows the Kim family from a semi-basement flat to a rich family's villa, and the film's stairs make the class divide physical. The real shops, stairs and tunnel behind those scenes can still be walked across Seoul. The route runs from a corner store in Ahyeon-dong to the Jahamun Tunnel and the Goyang flood set. Both family homes were sets, so the houses themselves are not on the map.
