Twin Peaks: From the Falls to the Double R
Twin Peaks is set five miles from the Canadian border, but its exteriors come from the Snoqualmie Valley, all around 25–30 miles from Seattle. David Lynch and Mark Frost found the places they had written into the pilot in Snoqualmie, North Bend and Fall City.
This route follows the series through five of them: the falls from the opening titles, the road with the welcome sign, the hotel, the sheriff's station and the diner. Most interiors were built on sets in a San Fernando Valley warehouse, so these stops are exteriors, and the Reinig Road pin marks the road, not one spot.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Snoqualmie Falls is seen in the opening credits of the show, and the 268-foot waterfall is internationally known for its appearance in Twin Peaks. For the Snoqualmie People it is central to their culture, beliefs and spirituality. Most of the river is diverted into power plants, but at times it is high enough to flow across the entire precipice. The top of the waterfall is less than 100 yards from the parking lot.
Visitor guidance: The viewing area at the top of the falls is a short walk from the parking lot.

Every episode opens on the "Welcome to Twin Peaks" sign, with Mount Si behind it, shot on Reinig Road just east of Snoqualmie. The sign gives the town's population as 51201, yet in the story Twin Peaks lies five miles south of the Canadian border, near Metaline Falls, far from here. In the pilot, Ronnette Pulaski is found wandering on a bridge before lapsing into a coma; the Reinig Bridge is the Ronette Bridge.
Location precision: The sources put the sign shot on Reinig Road between SE 81st Street and 428th Avenue SE with the bridge nearby; the pin marks the road.
Visitor guidance: A public road between SE 81st Street and 428th Avenue SE; permanent signs put up here are usually stolen or vandalized, so don't count on one.

In seasons one and two, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper stays at the Great Northern, owned by Ben Horne. In Episode 1 he takes breakfast there, enjoying a "damn fine cup of coffee" as Audrey Horne introduces herself and begins flirting with him. The exterior is the Salish Lodge at the head of the falls; the hotel itself was inspired by the Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo. Interiors were shot on sets in a San Fernando Valley warehouse. The Snoqualmie Indian Tribe bought the Salish Lodge in October 2019.
Visitor guidance: The lodge is a working luxury hotel, so you can stay in the building that stood in for the Great Northern.

In Episode 1, Cooper makes his way to the sheriff's department, where he and Sheriff Truman discuss the day's plans and interview Dr Hayward about the autopsy on Laura Palmer's body. Secretary Lucy is the liaison with the sheriff's office, and Truman's deputies are Hawk and Andy. The police station is the DirtFish rally driver training school in Snoqualmie, set up in 2009 on the disused grounds of a former lumber mill.

In the pilot the Mar-T Cafe in North Bend is the Double R Diner, owned by Norma Jennings. In Episode 3, Cooper, Truman, Deputy Hawk and Ed Hurley meet there at night, and Truman says the woods around the town seem to contain a "darkness" and reveals the Bookhouse Boys, a secret society keeping watch. After the series was cancelled, Kyle Twede bought the cafe and renamed it. Arsonists gutted it in 2000, and for season three the producers paid to restore its original appearance.
Visitor guidance: Twede's Cafe is at 137 West North Bend Way, North Bend.
