Karl Bushby's Goliath Expedition: Punta Arenas to Hull

Karl Bushby's Goliath Expedition is a walk from Punta Arenas, Chile, to his home town of Hull, England, via the Darién Gap, the Bering Strait, Siberia, Mongolia, the Caspian Sea and the English Channel. He started on 1 November 1998 and arrived in Hull on 2 November 2026. In the Footsteps of Jesus: Nazareth to Jerusalem

Follow in the footsteps of Jesus through the Holy Land: from the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth to the Jordan baptism site, Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee shore, Jericho, Gethsemane and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The Gospels name many places but rarely fix a spot, so most stops here rest on tradition. Each is labelled as exact, approximate or speculative, with what archaeology can and cannot show.

The Mistress of the Copper Mountain: Bazhov's Ural Tales

The Mistress of the Copper Mountain lives in the Gumeshevsky mine in Polevskoy, in the Urals, and Pavel Bazhov wrote her tales in Yekaterinburg after hearing them as a boy on Dumnaya Gora. Her story, from The Malachite Box (1939), is told here with Azov-gora and the Stone Flower town. The route runs from Bazhov's birthplace in Sysert through the Polevskoy hills where the legends were told to the Yekaterinburg house where he wrote them down.

William Tell: Lake Lucerne and Uri

William Tell's legend is set around Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland: his home village Bürglen, the Rütli meadow, the marketplace of Altdorf where he shot the apple, the Tellsplatte where he leaped from the boat, and the Hohle Gasse near Küssnacht where Gessler was killed. The route follows the story as the chronicler Tschudi and Schiller's play tell it. The legend is not documented history, and every stop is a traditional identification, but each place is real and can be visited.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: Kingsbridge to Berwick

In Rachel Joyce's The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, a retired man walks from Kingsbridge in Devon to Berwick-upon-Tweed, passing Stroud, Cheltenham, Coventry and the Scottish border town of Kelso to reach a dying friend. The route follows the walk stage by stage, from a post box in Devon to the hospice at the far end of England, and the reasons Harold gives, and withholds, for going. The novel names towns rather than streets, so every pin marks a town.

The Adventures of Tintin: Hergé's Brussels

Tintin's Brussels is the Marolles flea market where he buys the Unicorn, the Etterbeek street where Hergé was born, and the museums that keep his work: the Belgian Comic Strip Center, the Hergé Museum in Louvain-la-Neuve and the Moon rocket at Brussels Airport. Hergé was born in Brussels, and the city shows up in his books and in the places that celebrate them. This route follows five real places from his birth in 1907 to the Tintin sights you can visit today. The Unicorn flea-market scene is set in the Marolles; other stops are Tintin landmarks rather than story scenes.
