La Grande Vadrouille: Paris to Burgundy
La Grande Vadrouille (1966) is set in occupied France and filmed at the Paris Opéra, the Grande Mosquée de Paris, the Hospices de Beaune, Meursault and villages of Burgundy. It follows British airmen and two civilians from Paris to the demarcation line.
This route follows the film's chase from the capital's baths and opera into Burgundy, using the real locations where Gérard Oury shot the scenes. Several stops can be visited; scenes set in one village were sometimes shot in another.
Timeline & locations
What do the location labels mean?
- Exact
- The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
- Approximate
- The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
The five British airmen shot down over Paris jump with a plan: meet at the Turkish baths of the Grand Mosque of Paris. The steam bath is where Big Moustache, Stanislas and Augustin sit down and work out how to rescue the crew member still hiding at the opera. The hammam of the Grande Mosquée de Paris is also where Gérard Oury's team shot the scene in 1966.
Visitor guidance: The hammam is part of the Grande Mosquée de Paris; check its opening hours before going.

One airman lands on the roof of the Garnier opera and hides in the dressing room of the conductor, who is rehearsing Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust. Later the conductor leaves the building by boat, a nod to the underground lake legend from Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera. The film's music was really played by the Paris Opera orchestra.
Visitor guidance: Palais Garnier stands on Place de l'Opéra in Paris.

The truck full of pumpkins escapes a German checkpoint and reaches the Hospices de Beaune, where the two British airmen stay on as pretend patients. Several scenes were shot in the old ward known as the salle des pôvres. Founded in the 15th century by chancellor Nicolas Rolin and his wife Guigone de Salins, the Hospices is a Beaune landmark.
Visitor guidance: The Hospices de Beaune is open to visitors in the centre of Beaune.

In the Yonne, de Funès and Bourvil, dressed as German soldiers, are led off as prisoners, a scene filmed at Pierre-Perthuis. The village's old bridge over the Cure, restored in 1925, served as a set for the film in 1966. The pin marks the village; the exact camera position on the bridge is not recorded in our sources.
Location precision: The pin marks the village of Pierre-Perthuis, not the exact camera spot on the bridge over the Cure.
Visitor guidance: The old bridge over the Cure is in the village; reachable by road.

Caught crossing the demarcation line in German uniforms, the two heroes are marched back to the Kommandantur of Meursault, where their friend is already a prisoner. Meursault lay close to the free zone, and Oury shot the Kommandantur scene in the present town hall. Fans still celebrate: for the film's anniversary in 2006, forty years on, the village staged a weekend of scene reconstructions, including the town hall fire.
Location precision: The pin marks the centre of Meursault, where the town hall stands; no street address is given.
Visitor guidance: The mairie is in the centre of Meursault; the village is a short drive from Beaune.

Not every Meursault scene was filmed in Meursault. Gérard Oury did shoot several scenes in the village itself, including the Kommandantur, but some sequences supposed to take place there were actually filmed in the Yonne, in Vézelay and Noyers-sur-Serein. The film's occupied Burgundy is stitched together from several villages, so treat this pin as an area marker for the stand-in.
