Bridget Jones's Diary: Borough Market and London

Bridget's London is not the Holland Park of the newspaper column but Borough, south of the Thames. The film puts her flat above the Globe pub on Bedale Street. This is the home of Bridget, a publicity assistant at a London publishing company who spends her days fantasising about her boss Daniel Cleaver.

At a book launch her awkward introductory speech unintentionally insults Salman Rushdie and Jeffrey Archer, and she runs into Mark and his colleague Natasha. Daniel rescues her and the two leave together, which is how their romance begins. The scene was filmed at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Nash House, on The Mall. Today the ICA still has galleries, two cinemas and a bookshop.

Bridget and Daniel's first date was filmed on Shad Thames, the riverside street beside Tower Bridge. They dined at Cantina del Ponte on the Butler's Wharf quayside, and their first clinch comes beneath the walkways above the street. The warehouses, completed in 1873, once held huge quantities of tea, coffee and spices, and the street is still lined with them beside Tower Bridge.

Daniel takes Bridget on a mini-break weekend, and in a moment of passion she declares her love for him; he is evasive. Mark and Natasha, staying at the same inn, watch the two reciting limericks. The scenes, including Daniel falling into the lake, were filmed at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire. The mansion was designed by James Wyatt in 1788 and sits in 300 acres of parkland and lakes.

Bridget discovers Daniel's American colleague Lara in his flat, and plods glumly through Borough Market afterwards. Daniel's flat, Clink Wharf Apartments on Clink Street, is only a minute or two from her own. Food has been sold here since at least the 12th century; today the market mainly sells speciality foods to the public.

After quitting her job Bridget lands a role in television, where she becomes locally infamous for comically bungling human interest reports. Outside the Royal Courts of Justice she bungles her assignment to cover an extradition case for the show Sit Up Britain. Later Mark gives her an exclusive interview in a landmark legal case. The grey Victorian Gothic building on the Strand was opened by Queen Victoria in 1882.

At the Darcys' ruby wedding anniversary, Bridget learns that Mark and Natasha have accepted jobs in New York. She interrupts the toast and makes her distress obvious. The party scenes were filmed at Syon House in Brentford, the west London residence of the Duke of Northumberland. The house was opened to the public for the first time in 1951.

The finale: Bridget runs after Mark in the snow and finds him outside a shop. He had only left to buy her a new diary, to make a fresh start, and they kiss. You might assume the spot is round the corner from the Globe, but it is not: the scene was filmed at Royal Exchange Buildings on Cornhill, down the road from the Bank of England.
