Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Speculative
A reasoned guess: sources disagree or the exact place is unknown.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. Set in 2038, the game is built around androids, but its Detroit still has real landmarks. The Spirit of Detroit is one: a 26-foot, 9-ton sculpture cast in Oslo, Norway, which turns up in the game and in its TV spots next to the Monument to Joe Louis. The game's downtown is recognizably Woodward Avenue, even if it is not a 1:1 replica.

Visitor guidance: Public sculpture on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit.

  2. The giant fist is featured prominently in the opening sequences of the game. The real monument is a 24-foot-long arm with a fisted hand, hung from a 24-foot-high pyramidal framework and dedicated on 16 October 1986. It represents the power of Joe Louis's punch, and it is said to point toward Canada: the country Kara tries to reach in the game, because it has no specific laws involving androids.

  3. Detroit's Eastern Market is covered in street art, and a critic singles out a pair of red great white shark murals by Kelly "Shark Toof" Lund. The game nods to them: next to one of the game's coded maps of Detroit is a black-and-white bust of a great white shark. Eastern Market is the largest historic public market district in the United States.

Location precision: The game echoes the district's shark murals but names no wall; the pin marks the market district.

Visitor guidance: The public market is open on Saturdays year-round; murals are on buildings around the district.

  4. Markus discovers Jericho, a derelict freighter where deviant androids gather. In one section of the game you scan graffiti in Ferndale, a residential suburb, for a hidden path to the androids' safe haven. A critic finds Ferndale an odd choice: a low-crime suburb known for picket fences and funky local shops, not crumbling manufacturing facilities. The pin marks the suburb as a whole.

Location precision: The game places the hidden path in Ferndale but no specific street; the pin marks the suburb's centre.

  5. While preparing the game, director Cage made his way through the abandoned Packard Automotive plant and said you can still feel it and easily imagine how it could become something incredible again. One critic argues that Jericho, where androids live unshackled from their owners, would be a much more natural fit in industrial Hamtramck, where the deteriorating Packard plant stands. Treat the plant as inspiration, not a game location.

Location precision: The game never names the plant; it is a real site the director visited and a critic's suggested model for Jericho.

  6. In the game, CyberLife, the world's first trillion-dollar company and maker of the androids, has its headquarters on Belle Isle, an island in the Detroit River. Connor, the police investigator android, is sent by CyberLife to assist the Detroit police. The real Belle Isle Park has no such campus; it is a 982-acre island park with an aquarium, a conservatory and a nature center.

Real-world stand-in inGoogle MapsApple MapsOrganic MapsOpenStreetMapVisitable

Location precision: CyberLife is an invented company; the pin marks the real island where the game places it.

Visitor guidance: Belle Isle is a public park with an aquarium, conservatory and nature center.

The Division 2: Washington, D.C. in Collapse

Tom Clancy's The Division 2 is set in a ruined Washington, D.C., from the White House and the Capitol to Roosevelt Island, Union Station and the Tidal Basin. The Division: Manhattan in the Outbreak

Tom Clancy's The Division is set in a quarantined New York City after a Black Friday virus outbreak, and it plays out among real Manhattan landmarks: the James A. Farley Building, Madison Square Garden and the United Nations Headquarters. This route follows the Agent from the Brooklyn tutorial and Hudson Pier into Midtown, to the base and a rooftop firefight, and on to the final assault on the UN. The game's map is its own, so the pins mark the real places behind it.

Fallout 4: The Real Boston Behind the Commonwealth

Fallout 4 turns Boston into the post-nuclear Commonwealth, and most of its landmarks are real: Fenway Park becomes Diamond City, the Old North Church hides the Railroad, and the USS Constitution still floats in Charlestown harbor. The fourth main Fallout game, it is set ten years after Fallout 3. This route follows the Sole Survivor from Vault 111 outside Concord to the Institute beneath MIT, then to the Castle on Castle Island, the Navy Yard and Bunker Hill. Some story sites are invented, so their pins mark the real places that inspired or contain them.
