Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: Dubai, Prague and London

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided opens in a half-built Dubai hotel, moves to a near-future Prague, and ends at a London summit. The game's city is a fiction: Prague is compressed into three invented districts, while Dubai's hotel and London's Apex Centre do not exist. But each stop stands on a real place, and this route follows the story from Dubai to the Vltava and the Thames, using the real cities, the real model for Golem City and the real Alpine range as anchors.

Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. The game opens in Dubai, where Adam Jensen and a TF29 team close in on an arms deal inside an unfinished luxury hotel. Jensen crosses an abandoned skyscraper, taking out members of the Jinn gang on his way to the meeting. The hotel is invented, but the city is not: the developers drew on Zaha Hadid's architecture, and Dubai's real skyline includes the Burj Khalifa.

Location precision: The unfinished hotel is invented; the pin marks Dubai, the real city it stands in.

  2. Jensen comes back to Prague by train and reaches Růžička Station just as a bomb goes off. The blast kills bystanders and damages his augmentations, setting the investigation in motion. The station is invented, but the pin marks Prague's main railway station, the largest in the city and the largest Art Nouveau monument in the Czech Republic. It opened in 1871 as Franz Josef Station; its hall and platforms still form the city's principal rail terminus, with Metro line C connections.

Location precision: Růžička Station is invented; the pin marks Prague's main railway station, the real terminus that plays the same role.

Visitor guidance: Praha hlavní nádraží is the city's main station, on Metro line C; the game's Růžička station is invented.

  3. Most of the game happens in this invented Prague, a compressed city of three districts: a poor quarter south of the railway, an old red-light quarter and a modern quarter. Jensen keeps an apartment here, and the hub is dense with shops, bars and apartments. The Palisade Bank heist and the Dvali Theatre infiltration both unfold in these streets. The real Prague is the model: Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, a historic centre on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Vltava, and the same mix of old and new architecture the developers wanted.

Location precision: Překážka and the other districts are invented; the pin marks Prague, the real city they are built from.

Visitor guidance: Prague's historic centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage list; the game's districts are fictional.

  4. Jensen is sent to Golem City, the ghetto on Prague's outskirts where ARC is based, to confront Rucker. After the confrontation, Marchenko takes his place and steers ARC towards militancy. The place is fictional, but its model is real: Kowloon Walled City, the ungoverned Hong Kong enclave that packed about 33,000 people into 2.6 hectares by 1987. It was demolished between 1993 and 1994 and replaced by Kowloon Walled City Park, which now occupies the site.

Location precision: Golem City is invented; the pin marks Kowloon Walled City, the real settlement the developers used as its model.

Visitor guidance: Kowloon Walled City Park is in Kowloon City, Hong Kong; the park opened in 1995.

  5. Jensen follows the Orchid trail to Marchenko's base in the Swiss Alps, where he is captured and injected with Orchid; his altered biology lets him survive. The mission is called G.A.R.M. The base is fictional, but the range is real: the Swiss Alps are the Alpine region of Switzerland and contain almost all the highest mountains of the Alps.

Location precision: G.A.R.M. is invented; the pin marks the Swiss Alps, the real range named in the game.

  6. The trail ends in London, where Brown's summit is held at the Apex Centre. Brown refuses to call things off, Marchenko's men infiltrate the convention centre, and Jensen has to secure the building before the attack can go further. The Apex Centre is fictional, but the city is real: London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom, stands on the River Thames. Brown's fate and Marchenko's actions decide whether the Human Restoration Act passes or is blocked.

Location precision: The Apex Centre is invented; the pin marks London, the real city where the summit takes place.

Arma 3: The Island Behind Altis

In August 2010 a Bohemia Interactive team went to Lemnos to gather references, and came back with the material for Altis, the island where Arma 3 is set. Two years later two of the studio's developers were arrested on the same island and held for 129 days on suspicion of spying. After the arrest the game's main island, until then called Limnos, was renamed Altis; Stratis kept its name. The route follows the real island from Myrina and its castle, past a church with no roof and a miniature desert, to the airport and the old Allied base at Moudros, then across the water to Agios Efstratios. Arma 3's war is set in 2034–2035; the harbours, theatre and dunes are not.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth: Waikiki to Chinatown

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth sends Ichiban Kasuga to Honolulu. The developers rebuilt a compressed stretch of the city, from the sand of Aloha Beach to the markets of Chinatown, mixing real streets, shops and landmarks with renamed and invented ones. This route follows that Honolulu from Waikiki into downtown: Waikiki Beach, the International Market Place, the Ala Wai Canal bridge, Ala Moana Center, Iolani Palace and Chinatown. Names and distances have changed — Anaconda Shopping Center stands in for Ala Moana, Aloha Beach for Waikiki — but most of the streets and buildings are recognisable. It is a tour of a real city as a game remembers it.

Sleeping Dogs: The Four Districts of Hong Kong

Sleeping Dogs sends an undercover cop into the Sun On Yee triad across a compact Hong Kong built from four real Island districts. The designers photographed the city for a week and then bent it to fit the story. This route visits the four districts in turn, starting with Aberdeen, where the story opens. Pins mark whole districts, not mission sites: no source ties a specific mission to a street.
