What do the location labels mean?
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. The first chapter of Mafia II takes place in the fictional Sicilian town of San Celeste. Vito, arrested during a robbery in 1943, joins the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment to avoid prison. Then a Sicilian operation goes wrong, and Don Calò arrives to order the Italian soldiers to stand down. It is Vito's first brush with the power of the Mafia. The town is invented, so the pin marks the island of Sicily.

  2. In February 1945 Vito returns home on leave to Empire Bay and reunites with his childhood friend Joe Barbaro. The city is fictional, on the eastern coast and divided by a river, and its design is based on New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston and Detroit as they looked in the game's two time periods, 1945 and 1951. Real American cities shaped its architecture, cultures, public transport and landmarks, but Empire Bay itself is not a real place.

Red Dead Redemption 2 follows the Van der Linde gang through 1899 across five invented U.S. states. Most of the map has no named real model, but Saint Denis was built on New Orleans. Far Cry: The Real Places Behind Every Game

Every Far Cry game drops you into a country that does not exist, and almost every one was built from a real place. The developers camped on the savanna, sent a team to Nepal, spent two weeks in Montana and a month in Cuba. This route follows the series in release order, one stop per game. Pins mark whole countries or regions, not scenes: they show where each fictional setting came from, and one entry has no sourced real model.

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire: Hoenn and Kyushu

Hoenn is a world of volcanoes, islands and sea routes, and the games' own region is based on Kyushu, the south-western main island of Japan. Fans and reference writers have matched its towns and landmarks to real places across the island and the seas around it. This route follows the story from Littleroot Town to the Sealed Chamber and sets each stop beside the place it is said to resemble. The region is inspired by Kyushu, not copied from it, so every pin is an outside reading of the map, not an official location.
