Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire: Hoenn and Kyushu

Hoenn is a world of volcanoes, islands and sea routes, and the games' own region is based on Kyushu, the south-western main island of Japan. Fans and reference writers have matched its towns and landmarks to real places across the island and the seas around it.

Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Speculative
A reasoned guess: sources disagree or the exact place is unknown.
  1. Brendan or May has just moved to Littleroot Town, a small village where the game begins. The player picks Treecko, Torchic or Mudkip to protect Professor Birch from a wild Poochyena, and the adventure starts from there. The whole region is modelled on Kyushu, though the English article notes that Hoenn is rotated 90° against the real island to balance the gameplay. The French article on Pokémon places says the starting town is inspired by Imari.

Location precision: The game names no real place, so this is an outside reading; the pin marks the centre of Imari.

  2. Rustboro is the first big city, home of the Devon Corporation and of the first gym, where Roxanne, the Rock-type leader, hands out the Stone Badge. The French article on Pokémon places says the city represents Kitakyushu.

Location precision: The identification comes from a reference article, not from the developers; the pin marks the centre of Kitakyushu.

  3. Slateport is a port town known for its market, its museum and its contest hall. The museum is an oceanographic one. The French article on Pokémon places identifies Slateport with Nagasaki. The match is a reading of the map, not an official statement.

  4. Mt. Chimney is a volcano near Lavaridge, and its crater is the stage for a clash between Team Aqua and Team Magma, the two rival gangs who want to reshape the world of Hoenn. The French article on Pokémon places says the volcano represents Mount Aso.

Location precision: The game never names a real volcano; the pin marks Mount Aso as named in a reference article.

  5. Mt. Pyre is an island cemetery, and on its summit rest the blue and red orbs. One of them is soon in the villains' hands: the team's leader uses a mystical orb to awaken the slumbering Groudon or Kyogre, bringing drought in Ruby or heavy rain in Sapphire. The French article on Pokémon places says Mt. Pyre corresponds to Sakurajima.

  6. Mossdeep sits on an island and holds the Psychic gym run by the twins Tate and Liza. It also has a space centre, a research centre that sends rockets into space. The French article on Pokémon places says the city represents Nishinoomote, the main town of the island of Tanegashima.

  7. Sootopolis is hidden in the hollow of a rock and can be reached only by air or from the depths of the sea. Here the story peaks: the awakened Groudon or Kyogre brings a region-wide climate change that lasts until it is defeated or captured. The French article on Pokémon places says Sootopolis represents Yakushima.

Location precision: The identification comes from a reference article, not from the developers; the pin marks the island of Yakushima, not a single spot.

  8. The Sealed Chamber is an underwater cave where the first peoples of Hoenn once lived. Inside, a riddle must be solved to free the legendary golems. The French article on Pokémon places says it corresponds to the underwater monument of Yonaguni.

Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy: Highlands, Madagascar and the Hoysala Temples

Two Naughty Dog adventures, two treasure hunts: the Drake brothers chase a pirate hoard from a hidden cathedral in the Scottish Highlands to the fabled pirate utopia of Libertalia, and Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross follow a trail of Hindu temples through India's Western Ghats to the Tusk of Ganesh. The route follows both games in order. Madagascar and Karnataka have real pirate coves and real Hoysala temples behind the fiction, but the games' exact settings are invented, so every pin marks the nearest real place.

Metro Exodus: From Moscow to Lake Baikal

In 2035 Artyom leaves the Moscow Metro on a stolen train, the Aurora, and finds that Russia beyond the city is still alive. The sequel to Metro 2033 turns a Moscow underground story into a rail journey across the whole country. The route follows the Volga, the Ark at Yamantau, the Caspian and Novosibirsk to Lake Baikal. The game's places are invented versions of real ones, so every pin is an area, not a level.

Assassin's Creed Mirage: Basim's Baghdad, 861

Basim Ibn Ishaq begins as a street thief with big dreams and ends as a Hidden One in the middle of a hunt for the Order of the Ancients. Ubisoft sets his story in 9th-century Baghdad, in the turbulent years of the Anarchy at Samarra, when the Abbasid caliphs were losing control of their own court. The route follows him from the ruined town of Anbar to the mountain fortress of Alamut, through the districts of Baghdad and on to the oasis of al-Ula. Little of the Round City survives and the House of Wisdom is gone, so those pins are approximate; the Iraqi stops are for reading, not visiting.
