Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Approximate
The right area — a town, park or district — but not a precise spot.
  1. Simran's strict father Baldev is first seen here, feeding pigeons in Trafalgar Square on his walk through central London. The square is one of the England locations the crew used, alongside King's Cross railway station and Angel Underground station. Feeding the birds was once a popular activity in the square; a location guide notes the much-loved tradition is now discouraged, as the pigeons are regarded as a nuisance.

  2. Raj and Simran set off on their European jaunt from King's Cross Station, the start of the trip that throws them together. The station was opened in 1852 by the Great Northern Railway, on the northern edge of central London. It is one of the England locations named for the film, along with Trafalgar Square and Angel Underground station.

  3. After missing their connecting train to Zurich, Raj and Simran find themselves stranded in the Swiss Alps. According to a location guide, the station where Simran buys a cowbell and the pair are left behind is Zweisimmen, near Gstaad. Zweisimmen is the terminus of the Spiez–Zweisimmen line and the starting point of a major rail line that runs to Montreux, along Lake Geneva.

  4. The tipsy fantasy number "Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main" was mostly filmed on the promenade of Gstaad. A drunk Simran walks into the chocolate shop Early Beck, then runs outside, leaving Raj to pay the bill. Towards the end of the song, the pair return to a hotel in a horse carriage along the same street. The promenade is car-free, so the song's route is easy to walk today.

  5. At Saanen's railway station Simran reveals that she is being sent to India to marry a man she has never seen: Kuljeet, a man from Punjab to whom she has been betrothed since childhood. By the end of the journey she has fallen deeply in love with Raj. The film's European scenes were mainly shot in Saanen, Montbovon and Gstaad, and Saanen's village church of St. Mauritius was built in 1228.

  6. Back home, Simran's family relocates to Punjab to finalise the wedding preparations, and the mustard fields belong to that part of the story. They were not filmed in Punjab, though: cinematographer Manmohan Singh shot the song "Tujhe Dekha To", including the iconic mustard-field scenes, in Gurgaon on the outskirts of the National Capital Region. Gurgaon is a satellite city of Delhi.

Location precision: The film sets these scenes in Punjab, but they were shot near Gurgaon; the pin marks the city, as the exact field is not identified.

  7. The film ends at Apta railway station, on the Panvel-Roha route of the Central Railway. Simran runs along the platform as the train gains speed, and Raj reaches out from the compartment door to pull her aboard. The scene was hard to make: the smouldering heat made it difficult to shoot, and each time there was a retake, the train took 20 minutes to return.

Good Bye, Lenin!: East Berlin

Good Bye, Lenin! is set in East Berlin and shot largely on Karl-Marx-Allee and around Alexanderplatz, where Alex hides the fall of East Germany from his coma-waking mother. Its famous flying Lenin statue was filmed on the avenue. The route follows the plot through five places: the Kerners' flat on Berolinastraße, Alexanderplatz, the former Coca-Cola headquarters in Lichterfelde, Karl-Marx-Allee and the dacha in Finsterwalde. The flat's interiors were studio sets, so that pin is approximate.

Run Lola Run: Berlin in 20 Minutes

Run Lola Run is set and filmed in Berlin: a U-Bahn station, the bank at Bebelplatz, the Oberbaum Bridge and a casino in Schöneberg's town hall. Lola has 20 minutes to find 100,000 marks and save Manni, and the film replays them three times. This route follows the story through the real places where those scenes were shot, from the platform where the money is lost to the casino table where number 20 comes up twice. The film's own geography is loose, so the stops are filming sites rather than a running route.
