Timeline & locations

What do the location labels mean?
Exact
The pin marks the actual place where it happened or was filmed.
Fictional
The place exists only in the story; any pin marks a real-world stand-in or inspiration.
  1. Andy is hired as junior assistant to Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of Runway in New York City. The magazine's parent, Elias-Clarke Publications, is invented. For the film, the exteriors and lobby of its headquarters are the 51-floor tower at 1221 Avenue of the Americas, and Andy's interview with Miranda takes place at the West 48th Street entrance. The tower was formerly also known as the McGraw-Hill Building.

Visitor guidance: The tower at 1221 Avenue of the Americas can be seen from the street.

  2. Among Andy's errands is collecting Miranda's lunchtime steak from Smith & Wollensky. The production used the steakhouse and its kitchen for the scenes. The restaurant sits on 3rd Avenue at East 49th Street in a stand-alone building with a wooden green-and-white exterior, a look inherited from Manny Wolf's Chop House, which operated there from 1897 to 1977.

Visitor guidance: Smith & Wollensky is at 797 3rd Avenue, at East 49th Street.

  3. Andy meets Christian in the King Cole Bar of the St. Regis Hotel to pick up a Harry Potter book for Miranda. The bar's Old King Cole mural was painted in 1905 for John Jacob Astor by Maxfield Parrish, and the hotel itself opened in 1904. The St. Regis plays a second role: all the Paris hotel interiors in the film are really rooms here in Manhattan.

Visitor guidance: The bar is inside the St. Regis, 2 East 55th Street.

  4. When Emily turns up sick to a charity benefit and forgets the names of important guests, Andy steps in to save Miranda from embarrassment. The scene uses the exterior of the American Museum of Natural History on Central Park West, while the interior is the lobby of a courthouse at Foley Square. The museum's permanent building opened on 22 December 1877.

  5. In Paris, Andy spends the night with the writer Christian Thompson. Andy and Christian stroll along a street with Notre Dame Cathedral looming behind them. It is rue Frédéric Sauton, which runs south from the Quai de Montebello. The film crew was in Paris for only two days and filmed exteriors only.

  6. Learning that Miranda sacrificed Nigel's ambitions to keep her own job, Andy is repulsed and storms off. When Miranda tries calling her, she tosses her phone into the Fontaines de la Concorde. Meryl Streep did not go to Paris for the shoot. Designed by Jacques Ignace Hittorff, they were completed in 1840 and still stand in the Place de la Concorde.

Visitor guidance: The fountains stand in the Place de la Concorde.

  7. Back in New York, Andy interviews at the New York Mirror, and the editor says Miranda told him he would be an idiot not to hire her. The newsroom is that of the now-defunct New York Sun, which was once based in the Cary Building at 105 Chambers Street. The cast-iron building, built in 1856-1857, is now residential.

Location precision: The Mirror is fictional and the film used the New York Sun's newsroom; the pin marks the Cary Building, the Sun's former home.

Rocky: From Kensington to the Art Museum Steps

Rocky is set and largely filmed in Philadelphia: Rocky Balboa's Kensington home, the Italian Market on 9th Street, Pat's King of Steaks, the Art Museum steps and the Spectrum arena in South Philadelphia all appear in the 1976 film. The route follows the story from the opening fight on 25 November 1975 to the New Year's Day title bout. The Spectrum is gone, and the fight itself was shot in Los Angeles.
